Is there a TOO Cold?

I usually keep my fans on when I drive. For the cooling system I have the following mods: Koyo rad, 170 T-stat, Fan mod, 20/80 anitfreeze to water, removed rubber guard in back of engine bay and I have a fan on the IC. On my PFC I usually stay around 73 degree celsius. I remember reading that there is such thing as "too cold" for the engine. Anybody know?

Yea, I think the optimal temp is between 85C and 90C. With the large radiator you probably dont need to run the fans all the time.

I noticed you said there is a fan on your IC. Do you run the stock IC or aftermarket? What PFC intake temps are you getting with the fan on versus off. Is it helping alot, I'm sure it makes a big defference in stop and go traffic. What kind of fan are you using?

Thanks,

definitely fill us in on the IC/Fan setup. i'm planning on upgrading to an M2 medium IC next year and it definitely sounds like a good idea to add a fan. between runs on the autox course and trips down the drag it would be ideal to keep intake temps down.
when do you run the fan, nonstop? switch?

Sure there's a too cold. That's why you need to drive your car around for a while before pushing it. Before you give it a chance to warm up, it's too cold. I don't know what temperature is too cold but I think there's a good chance you're there. The stock fans don't even come on until 105 C. If you're consistantly running at 73 C you may not even be giving your car a chance to get warm.

I meant to say this but forgot in my previous post. The second set of butterflies in the throttle body only opens fully once the car is up to 85C. It is set that way to keep the car from overboosting while cold but once the temp reaches 85C it fully opens and stays that way untill it gets cold again. Seems like I heard the rotary runs its best at 190-195F which is right around 90C (90C=194F).

Anyway, I just thought I'd mention that

Hope it helps,

Thanks for the replys. I have a fan (see if I can get the brand but it pulls alot of air) mounted on the M2 Lg IC and my intake temps are about 42 on the PFC. the fan is always on when the car is on. I will see if I can post pics or put them on a site. I guess I won't be turning my fans on anymore then. I've never reached 100 yet. The reason why I have so many cooling mods is b/c I had a Cyberdyne gauge with a bad sensor so it always said I was at lowest 230 and usually over 260. I didn't know so I did mod after mod until I took it to Dave and he used an infrared temp and said it was perfectly normal. I don't recommend Cyberdyne gauges!

The double throttle butterflies open around 162-164F (IIRC), so if you are in the upper 160F range cruising you should be okay. T-stat opens completely at 177F on most aftermarket T-stats and starts to open sooner (I do not recall now, but it is in the manual, maybe 168F).

My car usually runs around 164F-172F when it is not hot outside and around 170F-188F when hot outside. My car will only see temps over 192 if I am on the dyno or at the track. I have no AST and that is about it for cooling mods. My radiator fans come on at 185F and that is only sitting in traffic when it is 100F outside and they stay on for about 3-5 minutes.

So if you car only gets to 163F like you are saying it is probably the lower of the cruising temps you want to see. Turn your fans off and have them come on after your T-stat opens. No reason to defeat the purpose of your T-stat.
