teflon water seals

has anyon have any experience with these teflon o rings for the water jacked on the fd. I called atkins rotary and asked how much they were because i thought they sold it, he said that he never sold it and never will. He said that they dont work and that pettit tried them they no longer use them either. First hand experience would be nice. Is hylomar the best thing we can do for the stock seals? I'm planning on doing a rebuild and was think about giving it a try.

Although there are two different kinds of Teflon encapsulated O rings available, I would stay with stock, and focus attention on carefull clearancing of ALL parts.
I am pretty sure most of the major rebuilders use OEM only for the water jackets. In your area I would check with Pineapple for Rob's advice, he seems to have an EXCELLENT reputation - far better than Atkins.

I think some of the airplane guys have used them, and in principal it seems like they would work really great.
From what I have read it would seem like they are truly superior to most materials.

Check out www.rotaryaviation.com. They do specify Teflon O rings for some areas. Their prices are absolutely the best on rebuild kits.

Hylomar is a brushable sealant used between precision machined surfaces, it's kind of like a putty when it cures.

Reused 'em.

As for Cam's comment, that not what he told me last time I was hangin in the shop.

Bryan at Rotorsports Racing likes them and puts them in his engines and he's been racing RX-7's for many years now. Plus, it's hard to imagine that anything could be WORSE than the stockers. They've caused a lot of trouble over the years!

They're in my new engine and so far, so good.

The weird thing about the teflon seals from rotaryaviation.com is that i emaild them and they told me the inner water jacket seal is factory mazda part. I replied to ask if she meant the outter seal but she hasnt gotten back to me yet. Is that the only place that makes them?

The outer water seals are factory parts- as for the teflon/silicon seals-we've built an average of 63 engines per year over the last 4 years, all with silicon/teflon seals-no failures yet. In fact our own racecars' engine had the engine torn down for inspection and the seals were re-used just to see if they would leak-they didn't.
We also use them in the Diasio 962R bridgeported race engines.

I'm pretty sure she meant the outer seal is stock and the inner one is teflon/silicon, but she hasnt responded. Any one know for sure how many different kinds of teflon inner water seals are out there? Which ones do you use r0t0rhead? Are there one one brand?

If a customer requests upgraded water seals I use the ones from Pineapple. I have had issues with the other brand not fitting correctly.

I just went through this whole teflon coolant seal deal when building my motor.

First of all, from what I can see, the outer coolant seals from Rotary Aviation are NOT oem parts in the sense that they are not straight from Mazda, although they may be made of similar material. How do I know? They do not have white paint on the side like the factory ones do. I have compared the two side-by-side.

I have also found that the McMaster-Carr teflon inner coolant seals fit the best out of the teflon ones available (part # 9319 K239 on the McMaster-Carr website). They require zero stretching with basically OEM fitment and are ~6% thicker than the RA ones based on measurements I have taken. I have not used the Pineapple ones but Pineapple tells you to stretch them out to fit, something you do not have to do with the OEM inner seals or the McMaster-Carr teflon inner seals.

The pineapple heavy duty coolant o-rings do not require stretching and fit with zero issues, unlike some of the other 'brands' i've been asked to use.

Now i'll use any coolant o-ring a customer wants, as long as it's oem or pineapple

The heavy duty coolant seals from Pineapple are viton:

The word 'viton' doesn't appear on the page, but they are made of viton.
