Supras - RX-7

Whats up everybody. I dont want to start any fires or anything, but what are your opinions on the 93-up Supras compared to the 3rd gen RX-7. I guess im asking performance wise, looks, reliability that sort of thing.

As far as reliablity, they are virtually indestructiable. As far as twin turbos go. They can put up big HP with very little investment. But for HP to weight ratio the rx-7 is better. I remember rading somewhere that the NSX and rx7 were the best hp to weight ratio cars. Talk to the guys on this forum www.nemkiv.com, my boy has a phat supra in the NE section; they are pretty cool guys. No BS all good talk, unlike www.supraforums.com they are **** talkers.

It really depends on what you are gonna use the car for, if you going for handling such as racing in a road course/auto-X, drifting, percision driving, looks, go with the FD. If you more into Drag racing, looks go with the Supra.

With supra's you can get good horsepower for little $$ but the overall car is heavier so you need all the horsepower you can get. Supra's are nice, but they have an expensive initial cost. Rx7's on the other hand have a low cost but over a year or two of maintance can add up to the price you would have paid for a supra. Don't get an rx7 unless you have a real love for the car. Don't get it because "it's cheaper" than the supra, because I can guarentee you it either won't be or it won't be by much.

In hp to weight, the RX7 rules. That's truly one of the reason's that it's so unbeatable. Just look at the highly controversial "Mustang" post. You've got people saying "i've never lost" to a Stang' or whatever for that matter. The scary thing is that it's true. An RX7 with 300+ rwhp is formidable. An RX7 with 400+ rwhp is nearly unbeatable. You can almost be promised that you'll NEVER lose on the street. You will hang with cars that cost far mar money than what you paid(Porsches, Ferrari's, etc..).
Your true enemies are the Supras. As the last person said, they make big power without many mods, AND they do it pretty damn reliably. They are truly scary. Your other enemies cost more, therefore they are more rare. These are hard tuned Vettes, Vipers, RUF's, and other specialty tuners. Keep in mind, you'll beat your fair share of these.
Good luck man. They're both pretty.
This is a nice question to ask yourself. I'm sure you'll get a lot of posts from people here with serious cars telling you what they are capable of.
Enjoy
Jim

If you are getting a car that is driven quite often get a Supra. They are a bit comfier and quieter than a RX7. Supras can also give you less hedache since they are not so maintenace hogs as the RX7.

Looks depend on everyone. Personally i love the RX7 look. I also like the Supras alot if it weren't for the not so original front end. I guess the *** of the supra is what matters most cuz thats all many people get to see .

BUT!

If you take it to a AutoX or road course is a whole different story. I was at a AutoX and the Supra couldn't take a turn without loosing the tail end. On paper they are good with such high numbers on the skidpads, but somehow on the autoX they have problems with transition turns and doubleapex turns too. Unless it's a fairly straight roadcourse, the RX7 will be ahead given similar mods and equal drives.

Remember thou... not everything is etched in stone so just get what YOU like. There are always exceptions to every rule and there is always a faster car out there than the one you have.

Dimcorner,
You're right about the autox thing. I've seen a Supra single-handedly take out half a cours of cones. I guess those magazine test drivers are pretty damn good drivers to make those numbers on the skidpad.
They might not be too fair as i've also seen an NSX end up in the weeds as well. I bet the only reason I haven't seen an RX7 do it is because there aren't any auto crossing this season (me included).

Ok well i own a supra, and i have many buddies with rx-7 that just striaght up sold it csu them cos to much to maintain, they look anbd handle awsome on auto-x and course . They are just a long look of a miata that is fast.

Supras get some good attention which gets old, its a toyota its going ot last you a long time and not having toget a new engine like the rx-7's.

You can put like 800 bucks and havea 400rwhp runing high 11's 12's if u can drive.

WHY not buy both. supras will be harder to find and expensive with the rx-7 cost less easier to find good luck

I love supra's and I think all of the previous posts have summed up some of the obvious differences. How many videos are on the net with supra's destroying the fastest cars out there? I know there are always faster cars, but all out horsepower and "roll racing" some are unbeatable.

I love the reliability, power, comfort, Reliability. I hate the price and that is why poor old me will not own one unless I find some super deal. I cannot pay 25k-40k for a supra with no to mild mods. Most guys with singles are selling them for high 30's. Rx-7's are much cheaper and yes the upkeep will eventually nickel and dime you to death.

They are different animals one is like a cheetah the other a lion with expensive rocket boosters on the back.

PERFECTLY PUT!

and i would really like the stress the part about "Rx7's on the other hand have a low cost but over a year or two of maintance can add up to the price you would have paid for a supra. Don't get an rx7 unless you have a real love for the car." that is so true... you really need a love for rotaries, and lots and lots of patience!

Supras are unbeatable on the highway, but their extra bult really hurts at the track (road not drag).
RX7s still are very competitive in almost all levels of autoX & track events.

I think both cars look great, but I personally prefer the way the RX7 looks. It is more unique & distinct look.

I know there are supposidly more reliability issues with the fd, but I have had no problems with mine, but I don't need to count on it as a daily driver. I like the fact that the Supra can fit 4 people in a pinch, but their backseat is something of a joke. Both have a pretty nice interior... nice, plain, & functional.

both are great cars, and if you find a good one of either, you will be a happy camper

Very nice to see that it is possible to have a civilized conversation on such a topic. Much better than the typical "Supra's are dogs, RX-7s will beat anything" crap.

Supra's are dogs and an FD will mop it's *** anyday. Please, I can't believe you people are comparing these two, are you nuts? Looks, performance, style, hands down get the FD.

Just kidding. I just wanted to be the first to break the trend of civility.

Honestly, I wanted a Supra at first but I saw enouhgt FD's that what I wanted changed. I used to like the style of the Supra but since having an FD, a Supra is a big, ugly, and heavy car. My style of car has changed or my car has changed my style. Either way I love the FD except how much it costs to go fast. I can't believe how much money I have put into it my car so far. I could have bought one hell of a Supra but it would still be ugly, but fast. I have a huge respect for the car but alot of the owners are not quite so respectful. RX7 owners are generally a more civiclized bunch who know there cars very well and understand their limits. Where as the Supra is a Ricer's dream car. Some Supra owner's are still ricers at heart, but they had alot of money so they bought a Supra instead of a Civic. The FD will teach you how to drive and will punish you for your mistakes where the Supra seems to be a more basic car that drives for you, you just have to push the gas pedal down. Good luck whatever you do.

The MKIV supra is a great car.

So is the 3rd gen

As for "which one is better" it is hard for the average person to say. The RX7forum is going to say the RX-7, and the supra forum will say supra.

Both are great cars.

As for looks, make your own decision. I like the 3rd gen. I think it is more exotic, more sleek and italian-like. The Supra is more muscular yet very nice looking.

Both cars have okay interiors. Both are very driver-oriented.

The supra has more power, more weight.

The RX-7 has less power, less weight.

For 0-60, 1/4 mile, top speed.. they are VERYYY close.

As for handling, the RX-7 is much more nimble, but the Supra is a decent handling car. Its no mustang

I would definantly chose the RX-7, but it is up to you.

One thing to consider is the Supra is more $$, but reliability is less of a concern.

You really cant go wrong though..

Have to agree with spooledup on this one, it is great to read a lot of civilized and informative responses to such a contraversial topic. I expected the **** to hit the fan when I saw the thread

both are great cars, you'll be happy with either
