Sugar in the gas tank
Some mother ****** decided to put about 5 #'s of sugar in my gas tank last week,my insurance guy said his gm tech buddies have never heard of this causing internal engine damage? He would like a rotary specialist to take a look at it and then they will decide if it is covered. Just had it towed to Mazda and there tech and service writer said that this would grenade an engine!!!

Damn s why would they do that? I'm not sure what happens if you were to have started. But it couldn't be healthy for the engine. Sounds like there gonna have to suck all the fuel out and clean the lines, and tank.

As I recall sugar cloggs up or messes with injectors, and or causes the mixtutre to burn hotter, or unevenly...
That and a Banana in the tailpipe are old pranks, but I've never heard of anybody using them anymore.
The FD has a lock/internal lever on the fuel door did they pick / force it !?

2 reasons went to put some fuel conditioner in since I just filled up the day before thought it might have been bad gas, pulled the latch no gas cap and in its place was part of the packaging C&H

Another urban myth, in reality.
In some cases the sugar WILL cause carburetor/injector problems, but the old wives' tale of an engine "locking up" due to sugar in the tank is...well just that....an old wives' tale.
Do a quick web search for "sugar in the gas tank" and you will see that no automotive authority has ever made an engine fail due to "sugar in the gas", or more specifically to "carmelization of the sugar leading to extreme engine failure".
The reason is simply because sugar DOES NOT DISSOLVE IN GASOLINE! It stays in your tank.
End of myth.

Good God folks...this Urban Myth was debunked years and years ago......

well bajaman, I just changed the fuel filter about a month ago along w/ a full tune. I jumped fuel pump and there was all kinds of solid debris in the bottom of the glass container i put the gas in. I really don't know but i doknow that the car was running fine until this and that is up tp the tech to figure out. the fuel door was forced open

Well I really don't know what to say other then the service advisor at Mazda and there rotary tech told me that it could cause extensive internal damage? Not trying to start anything just relaying what I have been told. So maybe urban legend 101 is still being taught in rotary school?

But.....unless you KNOW the rotary tech and service advisor to actually be knowledgeable, to really know their ****....then I would take ANYTHING they say with a grain of salt. Or sugar....
It is NOT urban legend that more FDs were killed by "service advisors" and "rotary techs" at dealerships than on the street. Lack of understanding of the 13BREW engine led most service departments to do some crazy ****, back in the day.

I recommend you pull the tank, flush it out and put in a new fuel filter.
That is it...

So the "fine sugar grains" would have to make it through the fuel pump screen, through the fuel filter, then through the very fine screen on the injectors, through the injector nozzle into the engine.
Not gonna happen.
If the sugar DID happen to make it through all the filtering the very minor amount that made it into the combustion chamber would BURN before it "ground up" anything.
