Stock spoiler debate finally settled! (More inside)
There has been endless debate as to whether the stock spoiler actually does anything or not. I found this:

Hmmm, interesting but since they didn't provide data on how much of an improvement I don't think the debate is settled. I have seen data that says it provides some down force but very little and since it raises the drag coefficient I'd still have to say it's mostly for looks. If ya want a wing that does something noticeable get the 99 wing.

of course adding downforce is going to increase drag coeficiant. That is what it is ment for. To apply pressure in the direction desire, in the spoilers case hold down front and back end.
Is it as functional as 99? doubt it, Still in has to increase downforce, it is impossible that it does not. Do you want that downforce at teh speeds we normallly drive? who knows, maybe not. THese are the test everyone is looking for.
Even the little lip on my 88 Jetta does something.

For Nathan kwok,
you're dreaming, unless of course you feel exessive drag and no
downforce
qualify for effectiveness.... the link was a dud... but... the Western
Washington University vehicle research institute has a wind tunnel and
the
head of the VRI (who worked on the original rotary development for
mazda)
has a 95 RX7 no spoiler... it's been tested against a 93 with a
spoiler,
the results are in... more drag, no change in downforce....

93Touring (spoiler removed)
The rear spoiler debate was settled long ago. Anyone who thinks differently lacks an understanding of basic aerodynamics. If someone wants a functional rear spoiler, get the '99 rear wing. Its been proven to work and is adjustable to boot :-)
