SRS Airbag light? how to turn it off?

I just purchased an 93 rx7 and the airbag light keeps blinking when i'm driving it. How do I get rid of this without removing the bulb on the back of the cluster? Is there any other way to reset the system? Also, does this mean the airbag has been removed/deployed before since the light blinks on now? Thanks!

It is blinking due to a malfunction. You need to fix the problem, not just remove the bulb.
Airbags are not to be fucked with....the thing COULD deploy for no reason if the fault is bad enough.....NOT the sort of thing you want to happen at 70 mph!

You can just remove the airbag insert that is held to the steering wheel by (3?) screws from the backside of the wheel to check to see if the air bag connection is disconnected inside the steering center hub.

One of the easiest way to eliminate the blinking (assuming that you find the air bag already disconnected) is to simply jumper the two wires in the connector that connects to the air bag in the steering wheel center hub to the clock spring assembly. That, assuming that the original clock-spring assembly is still intact in the wheel.

If the clockspring has also been removed than you can insert a 1 Ohm resistor into the connector under the steering column where the clock spring assembly used to plug into. For that you need to take off the sterring column plastic surround pieces. Other people, I'm told simply removed that airbag module.

An airbag light does not mean that the bag has been deployed and replaced. It will stay on constantly after its been deployed and is hanging out of the steering wheel and remain on until you replace it with a new, un-deployed air bag and reset the airbag codes. You need to bring it to a good mechanic and have them repair the problem with your car. Turning off the light is not the solution.

Great. I'll remove the airbag first to see if the airbag is connected correctly. If it is, then are there any other ways to troubleshoot this before sending it off to a dealer/mechanic? I just read my manual and it says this can be due to a system malfunction. hmm... Also, how do you reset the airbag codes? Can I try that first and see if the light still comes on?

This is not a repair you should try yourself. It is a major safety issue. An accidental 12 volts introduced to the system will set off the bag. Airbags are dangerous.

Also, resetting the codes will make it harder for a mechanic to diagnose, costing him more time and you more money.

Ok. I appreciate all the help you guys have given. Again, I'm new to rx-7s and been reading almsot all day for close to 2 weeks about them. I'm in socal and now thinking of taking this to a mazda dealership since I don't know many rotary shops in my area. Could any socal'ers tell me a few places?

Airbag systems opperate the same way in every car. No need to search out a rotary mechanic to fix airbags. A dealership shouldn't have any problems taking care of you.

Check out the "Body electric manual" it will give you the trouble codes for the airbag and the warnings about working on the airbag. Removing the bulb will cause the airbag box to start beeping at you.

sorry to bump this old thread, but my airbag light came on randomly today on the way to work and it wont turn off!!

probably not so coincidentally, my cruise control stopped working... i can almost deal with that, but not the blinking red airbag light... lol
i removed the airbag a a few months ago when i replaced my multiswitch and everything looked fine, so i put it all back together and everything was fine. my cruise control has been working most of the time, but doesnt come on occasionally, but this is the first time the airbag light has come on. could these two things be related?

i was also wondering how you check the airbag codes? i couldnt find anything about the airbag in the FSM
