Holy ****. Where are you located? How close to sources of salt?
I live only a couple miles from the beach and don't have ANYTHING like this at all.
You know what i looks like to me man?
Battery acid. Look very closely at the patterns.

Pull everything out, replace the destroyed parts (the center black piece) and assess the surrounding damage.
It truly looks like a sulfuric acid spill.
That's why there is very little damage between the A/C pipe and the black (well was once) bracket.
Also, if you look at the spot on the black bracket that is entirely corroded through, that is where the battery tray mounts.
Acid pooled in the recess on the fiber tray, killed the bolt, and basically just spent it's time eating away the metal there.
As far as the paint damage goes, I think that's definitely fixable - you shouldn't have to start cutting body or support pieces out.

You can buy battery cleaner (spray can) at the auto parts store and you can also use baking soda and a brass brisstle brush to srub off the crap. Sand it down as best as you can then spray pain with rustoleum.
Below is my warning thread on battery's:

Below is the replacement battery you should get:

If you have to buy a new tray, jhooks and whatever else (Mazdaformance.com) then maybe you should get the Honda 51 Optima and the tray that (can't remember members name) makes.

Oh yeah, the battery you use with his tray is the 51R, a common size in any auto parts store; and I'd look up some threads on the Optima batteries-- I'm not convinced of their ability to handle heat and vibration.

I guarantee you the oem part is going to cost more than you'll want to pay.
http://www.mcmaster.com/param/asp/ps...=1622;166=1662
^ 15.50$ for 8' length of 6063 Alum., 1/8" thick, 1.5" width, .5" legs
Cut to length and drill 2 holes on each side, 2 holes for the IC support, and 1 for the fibre battery tray.

I have a stock battery tray I'm not using. Pm me if you're interested.l I would also definitely make something to replace that bracket. I've seen cars w/o them but I think it may add a touch of chasis rigidity as well as holding the ic, air box, etc.
