So I need a new engine, do these prices seem right?
Hi all I blew the water seals from overheating so now I need a new engine. My mechnic to me that I have 2 options:
1. $4500 for a Mazda reman including removal and install. He recommended me this route since he said the remans that he got lately looked very good (new housings....)
2. $6000 for him to rebuild it (new rotors, housings, seals...etc.)
He's a very reputable rotary tech here in the bay area and I was just wondering if these prices seem right? Or should I just get it from Malloy or pineapple and just having him do the install?? And what is the average (reasonble) labor charges for removal/install?

If you are rebuilding an engine, get it ported...you'll be glad you did...even if it is a small street port!
from those prices, it sounds like they are charging about $2000 labor for removal/installation. I don't know if that is good or bad, I did mine myself (with the help of Xavier @ the RX7 store).

I think I'm leaning towards pineapple but I doubt that I'll be doing the removal/install myself. What is the average price for the removal/install? Also, how and what did you used to ship the motor to pineapple? What about the turnaround time? thanks!

ASIracing charges 3800.00 installed.The install or r&r (remove & reinstall)is $1000.00so their performance motors seem cheaper at $2800.00 than this guys remans .The 3800 includes reconditioned housings and rotors,Hurley 2 or 3mm seals(for 3mm add $75),Hurley side-seals,ported, polished with all new internals including main and rotor bearings,seas,etc..If you are wanting brand new housings and rotors you can expect to pay $2000+ and 99% of all Mazda remans come with reconditiond parts.Regardless the install and removal should be around $1000.00!!

oops, you can ship air from your local airport or depending on where you are, check with greyhound(yes greyhound)for shipping.Other than that you can call a trucking company.

okay i just finished talking to the guy and he said for R&R alone would be $1500. The cost of the reman that he's getting is $2700 and the remaining $300 would be the new gaskets and hoses that are REQUIRED when putting the new engine in. Does this sound about right??
So pretty much I'm left with 2 options:
1. go with pineappleracing's engine
2. Get the reman from Malloy Mazda for $1950+shipping
either way I'm still gonna have him do the install since towing my car on a flatbed everywhere for a few hundred bucks each is just not gonna cut it. So guys, help me decide on what I should do!? Which is better? Pineapple or reman from Malloy? What new parts would I be getting from Malloy? From Pineapple? And what would be the main difference? I'm looking for reliability...

Well..I'm exactly in the same boat sorta...Pineapple is currently my fav choice...I've talked to Rob, and he's a really friendly guy, plus all of his work is awesome from all my engine searches on the forum.
I've heard that remans can be really shoddy at times.

yes i'm really leaning towards pineapple since I'd like to have a ported engine. All I have right now is intake and full exhaust (dp, mp, cb). My turbos have 65k on them and the turbines looked like new the last time i checked so I doubt that I'll be going single anytime soon (especially after the $$$ spent on this new engine). So I guess the question now is which package should I go with? Should I get their oil mods packages? What kind of porting should I go with for my daily driven 7 with the above mods (IC coming soon)? Any advices would be appreiciated! thanks.

Welps..I guess it totally depends on what you're going for.
Are you looking for serious power with reduced streetability? Or a daily driver with some power to boot.
I think your best bet would be to give Rob a call...he'll tell you exactly what you want from the information that you give him.
I told him that I want a daily driver with the ability to hit high 11's, low 12's, and he recommended the 5yr/60k engine with a mild street port and Stage 2 oil mods.
Either way, you just can't beat his work, and prices...
I can't wait for my engine rebuild!

Engine Selection/Replacement Costs
I recently did a replacement on my engine and went trough Malloy Mazda Ask for Ray Crowe, Mazda Parts... Great guy!! and he charged me $2070.00 for a Reman Motor. The engine is shipped in a large Black/Gray "tupper ware" container and weighs approximately 210 Lbs. So, you'll have to factor in S/H cost to destination. Also, there's a $1000.00 Core charge for your old motor. Ask Ray to explain how that'll work.
Now, I did dropped in my own motor mainly to save time. My local Mazda guru, Dave at KD Rotary Ask for Dave or Kim is swamped with engine installs. But they both hooked me up with excellent tech advice which resulted in a successful swap with minimum stress
As for price, seems like many shops in the Tri-State NY area are going to around $75.00 hourly labor rates... so you can calculated your costs from that number. Whatever you decide... good luck.

Personally, I find this thread highly enlightening. I've got the cash to get the rebuild done..but noone to install it yet.

A Mazda reman should only be $2400!! and the labor should be around $1000 for the install like RX4UR7 said..well thats what my mechaninc charged a buddy of mine about 7months ago. If you have the money...get the thing rebuild and street port that SOB! Good Luck!

batmobile thanks for the advice but thing is - my car is not moving and I just had it flatbed-towed from the ghetto to sunnyvale, and that alone have already costed my 3 bills! The next closest rotary place would be in either Oakland or pittsburg which is so freaking far away...I just want to get this nightmare over with if you know what i mean.

One other point I forgot to mention, Malloy uses the MADZA Engine containers for shipping. They're better than a palate, easier to handle for the shipper, and protect the motor from gravity tests !

I thought about going Pineapple for my motor but went with BNR. They had better prices and is closer to where I live to cut down on shipping prices. He replies to emails very fast and builds the motor for what you want it to do. I am going with his Race Port, which sounds like a huge streetport. I wanted it to be reliable up to 600rwhp. I asked him about needing dowel pinning or hardened stationary gears and instead of taking my money and saying yes, he said for my goals that would be a waste of my money. So that was pretty cool of him, not to take more of my money for stuff that I didn't need.
Just another idea. Not saying anything about Rob at Pineapple, I have heard great things from them as well. Nocab's car sounds sweet. Just giving another option that is a bit cheaper then Pineapple.
My motor is costing less than $3000 race ported with 3mm seals and shipping.
