what you really want is the shade of flat black in an actual automotive paint, so I'd recommend a very dark gray without any metallic in it...if you want a less glossy finish you can always do a single stage job (still duraqble if you use a few coats). the flat black spray can job is good for the SCC project bc it is really just a toy car, a track star - you want the flat color, not the flat finish

everyone else- thanks so much for the input and opinions, I really appreciate the suggestions and insight you guys have given, I'm still thinking about it, I just don't know which to go with, I'll have to spend a lot more time researching it. Anyone else?

It still does, but laser really depends on the shape of the front of the car; carbon fiber won't have any effect on laser's tracking ability. If you have any type of flat surfaces on the front of your car (which is why they aim at your front license plate, but a grill or headlight is all it takes), it will reflect eventually, even if it's an opaque finish (and we're talking fractions of a second).

That said, the FD actually is pretty good against laser especially ifyou don't have your front license plate mounted. Low, sloping front ends require the laser operator to find a fairly flat reflection spot. I've actually escaped a laser radar that had me dead to rights because I didn't have a front license plate mounted, and the officer didn't have the patience to aim at the leading edge of the bodywork.

SCC's flat black 240 is somewhat of a beater/sleeper. A FD is a way nicer car. I think it would be a shame to paint your FD flat black.

Don't get me wrong, I think SCC's 240 looks cool. I just don't think flat black would look right on a FD.

So, let me get this straight...you have an FD with the standard black paint that is in OK condition and you want to spend the money to make the car look like it was painted by Jethro down the street?

I'm with you, Clayne and Artguy. I know why people move on from this car and get something that is not affordable by the today's typical teenager....

Yeah no problem brother.Sorry the werent that good a quality.I had to photoshop them down a bit.The originals look better but I couldnt post them because of their size.Whats really crazy is that I got them off this forum a while ago.Crazy huh.And flat black isnt that bad.
It looks nice but somewhat more of a dark gray depending on what angle you are from the car.

How about "natural rust"?

That would be less maintainence. Use a wire stripper, strip all of the paint down to the metal. Wait a few days for natural rust to appear. Dog pee will accelerate the process.

Your car will let people know you don't care about appearance, that it's all "real".

actually the "rusted metal" look is used in modern interior (home) design. things like faux aged brick/stucko fit into the same catagory. but those are different than a nice flat black job on a car.

hey, some people just call everything rice, i wonder if they live in really plain houses.

As for the style judgements, it IS a fad and it WAS started by SCC's Project Silvia. Personally I wouldn't do a rattle can paint job on an FD unless it was being built from the ground up out of salvaged parts.

edit: Josh, sorry to add to the flamage here, but you're asking opinions, so here's mine: The FD *DESERVES* a shiny glossy exterior. You can do whatever you want, but flat Rustoleum black FD will make me vomit out of rage!

Shouldn't this be in the Exterior forum, where it won't **** off clayne, et al.?

At least youd probably have one of the only ones around if you do decide to go with the flat black finish...

Allright guys, thanks for the opinions, suggestions and jokes about dog **** and rustoleum. For what its worth, the paint isn't in great shape, its failing on the fenders, and the body needs some work. I wouldn't waste money on the body if it was in good shape, its not so I'm thinking about what to do. See, now if I had gone and painted it and it looked like hell then you guys would be telling me that I should have asked for suggestions and input before doing something so dramatic. But I didn't, I came here to see what you guys had to say about it. Perhaps it should have gone in the exterior forum, but then would all of you read it? I'm looking for second opinions here, and this seems like a good place to get it. So thank you all very much for what you have contributed, I guess I'm going to stay with a gloss coat, for the time being at least, er, well this summer when the body is gone over.

Flat black was not started by SCC. Flat black has been used by street rodders forever. I have a flat black street rod with a chop top and flames that has a professional paint job, not spray can paint. Any single stage paint can be made semi-gloss simply by adding a deglosser. Some people use just the base coat in a base coat/ clear coat system. Jessie James' daily driver is an old chevy with a professional flat black paint.
