Can anyone provide any insight on Seibon carbon fiber doors? I hear a mixed reviews about the Seibon carbon door fitment. Most people mentioned that it needs tweaking but don't mention WHAT they actually tweaked. I'd appreciate if owners of the carbon doors can chime in here. The reason I ask is because I was in an accident the other day where a lady making a uturn got hit, lost control and slammed into the right side of my car--hence, I need a new door. However, instead of getting a new OEM door, I figure, why not get two carbon doors! Any input on getting the doors fitted correctly would be appreciated. Also, I'm assuming that overall, the doors are high quality?

 

I'd not ever consider getting a CF door unless it's in a race car with a full cage including additional side impact protection. The doors are an intergral part of the crash structure of the car, so you'll be putting yourself and your passenger's life in jeapordy by doing this.

 

Point taken and safety is also a concern. However, I read on another thread that the doors are "engineered to pass side impact tests", but the validity of the statement is unknown. I guess this part I can take up with the Seibon people.

You can't sue anyone when you're dead. Lots of companies make all kinds of absolutely rediculous and ficticious claims about their products. The only thing I'd accept is a passed, official crash test. CF behaves differently than steel does, it tends to shatter, whereas steel will bend and absorb a lot more energy than CF will. The way the CF formula cars acheive safety is with break away and crush panels, that's not how the door was designed, it was designed to bend and deform.

 

The ONLY CF doors that retain the "anti-intrustion" sidebars (aka side impact bars) - which are also made of CF mind you - are the doors made by Carbon Man (Ian) in Australia. He's the one that made all the CF parts for Mazda Australia's Bathurst SP, and also makes full CF doors for the Porsche Cup cars. They are FULL replicas of the OEM doors in CF (not fiberglass w/ a CF overlay such as the Seibon doors etc). And his doors are *expensive*. Well worth the money though IMO if you're really that hardcore of a racer...

Well, the other party's insurance will cover the cost, so new is fine haha

 

Ramy, do you know the weight difference between the OEM doors and the CF ones?

 

I would add a post in the wanted section. If that fails, try ebay or a junk yard. Depending on how damaged the door is, you may just need a door skin.

 

unless you have or plan on having CF hood, fenders,mirrors, and front bumper to match the doors, if not i would get brand new and painted the color of your car oem doors since insurance is paying for it.

 

I agree. I absolutely HATE when cars have doors and fenders in Carbon but the rest of the body is a different color. It looks like **** IMHO. If you're doing it for weight savings, paint it! If not, then either make your whole body Carbon or just leave it alone.

 

Basically i think 7's look good no matter where you put the carbon fiber with the exception of the doors, if you have CF doors you HAVE to HAVE the rest of the car to match it.

 

Ya'll are some LAZY bastards lol. The FD doors are a bit more than 10kg (22 lbs) per door lighter than the standard OEM steel door. So that's an easy 50 lbs shaved off, assuming you still have your full interior trim on.

Damn everyone hating on the CF doors I happen to like mine. Everyone talks about crashing, isnt the whole point not to crash? Yeah **** happens but still the odds of it being a perfect side impact crash to where all the force is put right on the doors is like the same as getting in a front end accident where the motor gets torn off the frame as pushed onto your lap. Pluss no dents, chipped paint, and I saved weight. And hey if you need a passenger door I have one you can come pick up think I saw you live in San Jose. I have two fenders as well all silver in great condition.

Yeah I live in San Jose--just moved over here from Sunnyvale. Yeah, accidents DO happen and nobody wants to be in a crash, however no matter how good a driver you are, other people will still be able to hit you. My car was hit while i was STOPPED waiting for a left turn light to go green. Lady making a left turn got hit by oncomming car, lost control, and slammed into me.

I'll keep your offer for the doors in mind--let's see what insurance makes of everything first.

Did you have much trouble with getting the cf doors to fit right?
