They should be higher than Mark's lights, but I'm hoping not a lot higher. It'll be above horizontal though. It'll be far from a ricey homemade job though. Like Nick said, if it's not perfect, then it wont be made until it is. Anyone else getting excited? Hhmm, I am!

Meant from a styling stand point (I'm sure the tech execution will be excellent;) ). How high it opens and whether or not it looks good is purely subjective though, so it's just my opinion. Just seen too many drifter cars with the sleepy look (or the almost fast asleep look as the case may be). Lower then stock is better, but not too low.:)

the_glass_man 08-13-02 11:21 PM

Will these be offered with HID lows as well?

That's kinda what I meant, it just didn't come out that way (I have that problem, hehe). It should be right around what you're looking for though; lower then the Knightsports, but higher then Mark's kit. There, that's what I meant. :)

That's definetely being planned. We're already trying to leave room for everything so when we get the normal lights up and running, the HID's should just "pop right in" with no modifications (to the kit itself).

the_glass_man 08-13-02 11:32 PM

Hmm, I love the popups but hate the lighting. I want HID's but I don't want to lose my high beam.
This sounds great!!! I can't wait.
:D

I'm in the process of moving right now (don't worry, won't affect anything with the lights), so I'm a little busy at the moment, but I'll try to shoot you an email sometime tomorrow when I get to my new place.

Sweet... I am glad I found this thread... I am a bit partial to the pop-ups, though the Rotary Extreme HID sleeks had been tempting me for some time now. However HID projector low rise popups are definetely more attractive to me.
If there's a listfor these.. I want on it, please :D

Mr. Stock 08-22-02 08:30 AM

Please offer the kit without the actual lights as well... since I had already bought the Hellas to try to make the half height light kit myself.

MazdaMike 08-22-02 08:57 AM

just curious but have u come up with any estimates on how much longer before u finish this cause i am very interested on seeing the final product

any updated pics? and are you still planning on including a carbon fiber housing for the lights?

Well, I am almost done with the brackets for a HID system on my car. I don't think its going to be affordable (as usual), because I am using sealed HID aux. lights from Hella. One is projector for driving and the other is high beam. Each set of lights was about $750 or so. But there is still the brackets to secure them, plus custom covers. It will probably take 3 weeks to get it all up and running on the car. It all depends on the bodyshop. I think what I am making is gonna be a one-off though.

cheers

You and I are on the same wavelength right now. The first advantage I thought of to having the low beam on the outside was that it would light up a wider area, although not really by much.

The main reason for having the inside light lower is pretty much asthetic. If you look the Miata kits or the 2nd gen RX kits, the light pods all have a flat bottom, so putting in a kit with the lights level looks perfect. On ours, the bottom is curved, so having them at a different height fits better I think. I did tear the bracket apart and move the lights around, and now have the lights at a 1/4" difference instead of the 1" difference, and I can tell already that this way is the winner. Also, following the curve of the body, the outside light is set back some from the inside light (you can't tell that in Picture #2 because the lights are actually on the outside of the bracket, not the inside where they go, so they'll be set back more in the car too). It's not much, so it shouldnt block the light any.

I'm still looking into HID's too, for these lights. Apparently in Japan they have a kit that fits. It's still a possibility at this point. I had an opportunity to look at Bill's headlights a couple weeks ago. While I'm sure he put a lot of work into it, you can defintely tell it was a one off production. I was looking at the way he had the lights mounted and just had to scratch my head and wonder why in the world he did it that way, but I suppose it does work. I also lit up one of the Hella's against his HID, and it doesn't really appear to be that much different (keep in mind also that it appears he used driving lights for his, the ones I'm using are DOT legal). :)

I have to install a Fluidyne Rad in my car tomorrow, so I'm going to try and take pictures of the install and maybe do a little How-To writeup, and while I'm there, I'll install the lights again and take some pictures of it with the new changes. Should have them up here tomorrow afternoon.

Ryan

I just spotted this post and got a great laugh. Ryan do you really believe that I would
leave my car at Pettit and then leave the country with any part of my finished lights or any
other project anywhere near the car? And you just justified my concern. Do you believe
that it is ok to dig through my car without my being there? I just thought I'd ask.

froggy 08-28-02 08:59 AM

update? I'm looking forward to a date when I can nab me a set of these!

rx7even 08-28-02 12:21 PM

Mr. Stock - It'll probably be possible to offer them without the lights too. In fact I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.

MazdaMike - We should have the prototype up and running real soon. We've changed my origial design quite a bit, so it's taking a little longer to get them up and running.

Wptrx7 - As soon as the prototype is on the car, I'll take a couple picks and post them. The carbon fiber surrounds are still planned, but will probably be optional, with a fiberglass surround standard to keep the cost down for those that don't want cf.

Bill B - At the time I had no idea that was your car, or that it even had anything other then stock headlights in it. I was at Pettit and had my kit there to show Cam. We hooked a jumper wire to the lights to see the beam pattern, and he asked about HID's. To show me some HID's, he walked over to your car, turned on the lights for a few seconds, turned them off, and that was it. Finished or not, I just got a quick glance, and that was my impression from them. From what I saw, they did look pretty nice. No one went digging around or snooping around anything though. It probably took longer to read this then the time I spent looking at your car. :)

froggy 09-11-02 09:12 AM

Well, Whats the word? Is it looking like I will be getting an early christmas present this year?

akathugs 09-11-02 07:06 PM

Pictures? Updates?? Come on man~ Just can't wait
to see the final thang.

JimmyJimboJet 09-11-02 09:37 PM

ryan, that's your que to come out and say,"They're finally done! the price is only $500 dollars, and i'll knock it down to $400 if you tell me the lights look great..." ;)

rx7even 09-12-02 02:24 AM

Good news! They're.........Ok, well I can't say that yet. I'll try and call Nick in the next couple days to see where the lights are at. If there's anything new to add, I'll post it here.

I just ran across this too, a light available in Japan. Interresting - I've never seen anyone mention it before.
