rx7 reliability issues

I am just wondering how bad the reliability is on the fd? I have heard of reliability mods to the car so dont they make the car reliable after that? I am interested in buying a silver or black 94 R2 but i am very worried about the reliability issues. I would really really love to own one!!! but i will not have the money to be fixing it every 6 months or so on reliablity issues. Also i heard that the fd's engine only lasts about 100k max, is this true? thank you for any help on this subject.

thanks i looked around to page 6 or so and found most that i wanted to see. I will get one ! i was going to spend 20k on a nice one but it seems that the 94 r2 i want to get is only worth about 13k. Oh yeah i cant wait to spank everyone in my state! as for reliability issues i think this is worth it! And i guess everyone would agree that KD Rotary is the place to get your FD tuned at.

this is not a car you just want to buy for the hell of it....

good luck finding one.... you will need it

by the way... i like how you registered the car on the profile, yet you dont even have it

i've been doing research on FD's since 1992 and after owning 3 FC's I finally got one December 2000. If you do not know anything about these cars now.....

DO NOT BUY ONE.... be smart, educate yourself FIRST... even then you will be in for a few nasty surprises once you get it....

not to say that this applies to you... but there are a ton of young dumbasses who have recently registered on this forum because they saw that movie (you know which one Im talking about) and think that an FD will make them the most badass kid on the block...

it will make you the poorest kid on the block.... the only people that put up with these cars religiously are purist enthusiasts.... not bandwagoners.... they are a pain in the ***.....

and again, if this does not apply to you I apologize, but hopefully someone will read this and think twice about it.

i get your point. But i have been researching 93+ rx7's for about a year now. ive never had a chance to test drive one or know a person personally who has one. I knew that the FD wasnt reliable but after reading some of the threads in here i started to freak out. Before i thought that after making reliability mods to the car it would be fine. but i was wrong and was just unsure and worried that i would be buying new engines as a hobby. But thanks for the warning its a scary one to newbies but its real.

it's not as bad as you think...if the reliability mods are done, and the tuning is right...there is no reason that your engine shouldn't go over 100k...as for anything over that...i'm not sure i wouldn't want to drive a sports car with 100k+ miles on it. basically it's like this...you do the 1.5k worth of reliability mods (add the .5k for the hose job if you want)...so 2k in reliability mods. Car should be good to go 100k miles. If you start tuning it...get it done right. 2 mod rule (i wouldn't go with 3) = ecu upgrade...at 100k miles you should look into getting a street port rebuild. The way I see it, if you're like me you'll barely put 8000 miles on it a year. So if you get one with like 50k original miles on it...you're looking at 6 yrs...then rebuild...then another few years of worry free. Just get everything done right...THE FIRST TIME

tymmerx7-

sorry for the little rant.... i did not mean to scare you off. I just read a couple of "dumbass" posts before i read yours and i was a bit fired up.

anyway. it is good that you are taking your time. lack of money is sometimes a good thing. that's what happened with me. I had to wait several years before getting an FD. Im actually glad I did not get one when they first came out.

be patient. FD's are a handful and can easily become a money pit. But, damn are they rewarding when they are running 100%.

Good luck finding one!!!

PS. sometime soon... find someone who has at least a near stock setup to let you drive one... so that you can find out how they are supposed to feel. The very first one I ever test drove had NO *****! I was not impressed and thought that it was normal, until I drove the next one!!!!

before u buy one invest some time on this board of wisdom. this car will eat your lunch and the wallet at the same time if u do not know what to look for when buying this kind of car. first off it is a rotary engin, that in itself is enough but when u add two turbos that is when it gets interesting. my advise is to find a certified engin specific mechanic that only knows rotarys and that is hard to find believe me cause iv tried . but once u have become familiar with all the cars pros and cons than by means get one. 3rd gens are one of the most awsome cars iv ever owned.

im in the same situation.. still learning more about them so i know what im getting into before i buy the car... i made that same mistake with buying a corrado so i want to be sure this time... not to mention im leaning towards an FD with a blown motor and i know my brother can rebuild the engine (previously worked at a joint mazda dealership) ... only problem is that we both live in apartments so im still undecided... oh well even if i dont get a FD, a 2nd gen mr2 with a swap is still an option

well i dont plan on taking the FD anywhere else but KD rotary. It seems to be the most reputable place there is. And in Minnesota i dont think there is one at all or around a 500 mile radius that is. Also im Super picky about who wrenches on my cars and if KD is the best place then it is going there. God bless that a top 4 Rotary tuner lives in the U.S.
