Rx7 myths?
hey all,
don't wanna sound like a complete newb but i am looking to get rid of my car (v6 camaro) for something faster next year, i have been intocars for a while and still don't know why i buoght my car in the first place. i was looking at rx7's but have heard so many bad things about them from other people, you guys seem to love these cars alot and I was wondering if this would be a good car for me, I will be driving it quite a bit (average 10k a year) the car won't be driven in rain or snow or realy cold weather but besides that she will be driven alot. other cars i am considering are a tt300zx or jsut building up a lt1 f-body.
thanks for all replies,
andy
oh and straight lines aren't what i'm all about so it won't be the typical high school street racer

With your limited income, I'd recommened getting either a NA 1st gen, NA 2nd gen or a Turbo II 2nd gen. All are much easier and cheaper to work on than a 3rd gen. Turbo IIs are pretty quick (0-60 in 6.1s) and being a turbo, it doesn't take much to make them faster.

I would stay away from the 3rd gens and possibly stay away from the TurboII 2nd gens. Turbo cars are inherently high maintenance vehicles ... especially turbo cars with a lot of miles on them. Add in the limited budget and I'd say you're in over your head. And if you're not wrench-friendly, I definitely recommend you NOT getting a 3rd gen RX-7.

Hehehe...
Every couple of days a person while come onto this forum, and post a thread like this. Here's how it -always- goes:
New Member: Hi! I'm currently driving a XXXX and I want to get rid of it and get a 3rd.-gen RX-7, because they're SOOOO cool! Can you guys tell me about them? Oh, I don't have that much money to spend.
Veterans (in unison): We strongly recommend that you DON'T GET AN FD!
I don't mean to dog on anyone at all, I just think it's somewhat amusing that whenever a person appears looking to buy an FD and asking questions, most everyone tries to deter them from purchasing one. For very good reasons, obviously, but it's still sort of funny.
Oh, and to the original poster, if you DO buy an FD, PLEASE, PLEASE be careful with it. We've been losing too many people in FD-related crashes lately. These cars demand respect and have proven that they can and will be deadly if you let them get out of hand.

I had a Triumph Spitfire in high school and the thing was never running. It pissed me off 'cos I needed to have a car in high school. I ended up driving it when I shouldn't have and I "broke" it. So if you don't always have to have a running car (i.e. you can borrow your parents cars) then you might be ok with a FD. If you need a reliable car to haul your friends around in then don't get a FD (but then it wouldn't be very good for hauling people anyway - although I did get 7 people in my spitfire once...)

I bought my 94 RX7 in march, it was bone stock with a newer engine. i have put 22K miles on my car since then, its my daily/only car. just about EVERY single problem I have had was a result of modifying my car. EVERY ONE (except a bursted radiator hose).
My car has never given me any problems that was not related to modifying it. Here is a list my problems and the causes.
coolant overflow tank cracked. bought a new one for 120 bucks installed myself.
upper radiator hose cracked, bought a new one for 32 bucks, installed myself.
I took my airbox off and the "mystery hose" caught the nipple on my AST and cracked it without my knowledge. I drove the car and almost overheated it. I replaced the AST and then dropped a worm clamp, I thought it fell under the car, it landed under my radiator fan and burn out the motor. I had it replaced. Then my KOYO RAdiator pressed the fan against my intercooler, warping the shroud and killing my new motor. I replaced the fan and shroud again.
My drivers side door handle broke, replaced it for 210.00 and installed myself.
Anyway, you get the idea. I think RX7's are reliable until they go boom.

They fail on 300zx's, 3000 GT's and other cars as well, so you won't be saving yourself too much maintenance by getting a different turbo car. If you want reliability, stay away from turbos and just get a decent powered N/A car.

I just got a 7 and i have alot of issues that need to be addressed. I dont think it is too pricey considering all the things you get out of it. Its like buying a ferrari. There are many pluses to owning one, and of course there are negatives. You win some you lose some
