Is anyone else a little paranoid about posting VIN numbers of your vehicles?

In the wrong hands, this database would make for some fine information for a theft ring....

Not the way I see it. If someone wanted one, it wouldn't matter whether or not the VIN was out there anyway. Besides, it's visable on the car anyway so it's not some secret thing. I can understand your concerns though, but I don't think having this information would make a difference one way or another. It's just another ID # for the car, just like your license plate, and look at how many people see that everyday.

That's a good point. The marque registries I'm familiar with are produced by an owner's club, or someone associated with the owner's club, and are on paper....not open and available on the internet. Also, information that connects to the car's curremt owner and the current location of the car is provided at the owner's discretion. Some people are comfortable providing such information, others are not.

It's all too easy to track people and things from scant information these days. (Such as an e-mail address or a screen name.)
Hypothetically, say someone is looking to steal a low mileage '94 R-2 in Virginia....well an online registry might point to a convenient target.

The registry I'm most familiar with was done on paper. The pages were replaceable, similar to a loose leaf binder, so updates could be provided without redoing the whole thing. Information was supplied voluntarily. It took more than a year to compile (I think it may have been 2) and the person who worked on the thing then sold it to club members for something in the $20 range, as I remember.

Someone else asked me the same. I'll tell you what I told him. For $25, he can go to the local DMV and get vehicles, license plates, and owner information (it's all public information). Owner information includes Name, Street Address, City, State, and Zip Code. Vehicle registration information includes Tag and Decal Number, VIN, Issue and Expiration Dates, Titling, License, Lienholder Data, Body Type, Make, Model, Year, Colors, Fuel Type, Issuing and Residence Counties, Odometer Readings, and numerous codes and other data. I hope I didn't forget something

This database may be searched with a full or partial license plate number or full or partial VIN. In plain English, that means that all a thief has to do is search the PUBLIC database from the DMV by typing in "JM1FD33" and he'll basically get all that information for every single FD registered in that state. In fact, you can also search by make and model in some states, as was shown in the movie "Gone in 60 Seconds." So the info's definitely already out there

But such a search will not produce certain information that presumably will be available in a good registry. For instance, it's unlikely most state DMV's will make a distinction between Touring and R-1 models. I know for a fact some states are more restrictive than others when it comes to vehicle information, so color and mileage may be hard to come by in some cases.

I suppose I could sum up my point by saying why make it even easier for the wrong kind of person? For me, the ideal situation would be to confine marque registry information to current owners, as much as possible. Charging $ for a registry book available to club members is one way it's been done by owners of other kinds of cars.

You have a good point, and Jeff made a suggesstion in the other thread to drop the check digit when writing in the VIN #. I can tell you this...we're def. trying to do this in the most safe manner possible. The prob is, until forum members see the idea moving along (ie in the thread), they may be discouraged from formally contributing to an actual and secure database, which we're planning on making.

I'm sure Christian (Railgun69) will chime in here in a sec and we'll see what he wants to do. He's the one that got the ball rolling But again, I just wanna assure ya that we DO want to do this in the most secure and safe way possible. I mean, his and my FDs are the 1st and 2nd ones posted on the thread! lol

That's exactly what will happen.

Don't get me wrong, if some are uncomfortable posting their info, by all means, I'm not forcing them to. I, personally, don't care as I have tons of documention so if there was an issue, I'd have plenty of proof to back it up. Yeah, it might be a pain, but the possibility of nailing some shmuck that's trying to screw with things is fine with me.

I'm looking into securing something that will be tied into my web site (which I hope to have up sometime in March) that will link to a secure site for this DB. Where it will be hosted to ensure it's security and on the same note, be affordable is TBD.

Anyway, going through my RX-7 folder for something else I came across a breakdown of colors sold in the U.S. by model year, trim package, and transmission. It was posted years ago by someone named Red-Rx7 in Olathe, KS....but I also remember seeing it available elsewhere on the web.
... You know, that information wasn't the easiest to come by either. But, I pulled some strings. That, and during the time of the "mailing list", it took me a little while to type all those things out!

524 3rd generation RX7s were produced and sent to the United States. The $40,000 price tag back in 1995 was somewhat steep and was primarily responsible for killing the "affordable sports car" (Mazda's slogan for the 1st generation RX7 in the 70s)

I have a 2002 Spirit R Type A JDM RX7 that does not allow for US license plates to be mounted on either the front or rear bumper. Does anybody know where I can find an adapter for the front and rear bumpers? I'd rather not drill holes into the car.

Thank you.

If you don't know what you're talking about, please remain quiet. Florida ALONE has 616 1993 3rd gens still currently registered. That doesn't include the other 300+ '94s and '95s they have, NOR does it include the other 9,500+ FDs still registered in the US. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...hmentid=172776.

That has NOTHING to do with it. In fact, the "affordable sports car" slogan was SUPREMELY succcessful for Mazda, as it set the world record for the largest units of any single model sold in history with the Mazda Miata - the affordable sports car. Def. sounds like it flopped huh?

Oh really? Why don't you post the Spirit R badge/emblem from the firewall, and a valid US title to go along w/ it?

...that does not allow for US license plates to be mounted on either the front or rear bumper.
Do you even know what a Spirit R LOOKS LIKE? Here, let me help you. Pay CLOSE attention to the front bumper
