RX-7 3rd Gen availabilty in UK
Hi guys, I'm looking into buying a 3rd Gen 7 in the next couple of months and whilst trying to do a bit of research I came across this board. I've learnt loads from reading up here so far, but now I have one or two questions and I couldn't find a UK owners club or anything over here dedicated to the RX-7 which is as active as this place
Basically I'm in the UK and we don't have it as easy as you lot for insurance at a young age. I'm 19 and have owned a couple of powerful cars and have always loved the RX-7's, they now seem like the next logical step up (I was previously going to go for a DC2 Integra R but the 7 won me over with it's looks and rwd). I've done a lot of phoning around and I cannot get a quote for a Jap import at all. The RX-7 is group 20 over here (top category) so I think this combined with the word import sends insurers running scared. The best quote I've had for a non-import is £3020 fully comp which I think is about the best I will find, but then when I went to actually look at the 7's on the market here - they are pretty much ALL jap imports. Ideally I want one in black, with a manual box and sub 40,000 miles - ruling out everything else leaves me with just imports.
So I was wondering if you guys know any specific figures of how many actual 3rd gen 2.6 twin turbo 7's were sold in the UK to begin with, to give me some idea of what sort of situation I'm dealing with here. Is it realistic for me to hold out hoping one meeting my criteria appears on the market, or should I wait even longer till I'm 20 and have an extra years NCB then maybe try getting quotes for an import again? I've tried googling for this info but cannot find any solid figures for how many UK-spec cars are out there.
My other question is to do with imports. I've found a lovely black manual '93 on autotrader with just 13,000 miles on the clock. I rang the owner and it was imported last year and he was the first UK owner. He said it didn't have any of the service history from Japan, but did come with a certificate from the exporting company to verify the mileage as genuine. Now if I do end up waiting and going down the import route - would you say something like that is satisfactory and the certificate should be proof enough, or could it still have been clocked on the way over and I'd end up getting screwed? I want to spend a bit more up front to minimalise the risk of requiring a full rebuild / new rotor tips unexpectadly in the first few months of owning.
Thanks for your help, if I think of any more questions I will add them to this thread...

I don't really know much about euro 7's and numbers. That sounds rather high to me insurance wise, what does that equate to in dollars US? Best bet would be to check the resgion specific forum on the front page, called the european forum. Best of luck, that's not very many miles for a 93 so if thats true It'd be a great car.

Ahhhh thanks, I didn't previously notice the european sub-forum, will post my question in there
Sadly that insurance is high, about $6000 in USD I think - but it's something you just have to put up with if you're a petrolhead aged under 21 over here!

Very active UK RX7 Community !!!!
Hi,
I am amazed that in your search for active RX7 boards you didn't come across:
http://www.mazdarotaryclub.co.uk
That's a huge community (for the UK) and ALL you questions can be answered there.
There is also an un-official 3rd Gen owners club called FD-UK
http://www.fduk.org
But you need to actually OWN the car to participate on the board. Both contain a plethora of information, and will be able to supply you with more relevant, local, information....
See you there,
Alex.

Smifta said FDUK and MAZDAROTARYCLUB... both of which im on
Tell the insurance companies its a 1.3L and see if it gets you anywhere. Some UK insurance companies know about the "rated at 2.6L" stuff. Some dont.
And yes insurance is retarded over here. Almost bought an R34 until I started calling about insurance. The best quote I got was 3000 pounds. Close to 6000 a year USD. (yes I get paid in USD too)
So Im either going to buy a newer RX7 or R34 right before I leave this godawful country.
Its SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO depressing in this country. NO fast cars... Everyone drives little econo boxes. And the price of everything is out there. Not to mention the 17.4% sales tax!

UK rotary clubs as noted above.
UK RX7s numbered only 124, sold between 1992 and 1995. But they do come up regularly on MRC, so sign up and keep an eye out on that forum.
Insurance: a nightmare, but the guy that bought my UK '7 last year, was 21 and is paying about a grand, fully comp.
You will be penalised heavily for your age unfortuantely, but you can get significantly cheaper insurance in the UK if you look out for "classic car" policies - i.e. RX7s that are over 10 years old. This may make having an import that much easier to insure.

Hello,
Nice to see another UK person on here.
As everyone else mentioned check the MRC - join up - there's some good stuff on there and friendly people.
I have a Jap import RX7 [i really didn't bother with a UK car just because of the additional price] my insurance is just over £1300 and I'm 23 but my last car was stolen so i've got no no-claims
TEDDER1? what you on about sales tax and euro boxes. The US has far worse regs on what you can and can't do to cars. I guess you are looking in the wrong place. What you tend to find is idiot chavs driving Saxo's and Corsa's with 5" tail pipes and snow plough bumpers. Yes this is **** but there are a lot of decent cars too - you just have to keep you eyes open.

Where im from in orlando, the sales tax is 6-8% (depending on the county)
there is no emissions testing.
I have seen -some- nice cars over here since ive been here. There are just a lot more in the states. Dont know if this is a good thing or not but you could be 16 and buy a 300hp car over there in the US. (it might be 18 now... dont know) all I usually see in max power and on the street are these lil econoboxes all decked out. 1.6L -2.0Ls and stuff. Yes a rotary is only a 1.3L but its way different...
of course im in suffolk county.... thats probably why im getting so depressed about this place. Dont mean to sound spoiled...
