RHD Conversion!

RHD Conversion!
I've been looking into buying a RHD FD3S that's in NJ and registering it in the US, but recently discovered how difficult (or maybe even impossible) that would be. I'm still very attracted by the concept of a RHD FD, and since the price is right on this one, I'm thinking I might still be able to buy it and a USDM 7, then convert the USDM one to RHD using the parts from the JDM one.
In short, I searched, and I couldn't find it. Has anybody seen the RHD conversion done on a USDM FD before? If so, please supply links!
THANK YOU GUYS! Look foward to joining the FD community soon.

Trying to convert a lhd rx7 to a rhd rx7 would be damn near stupid. Go play with a rhd civic and dont attempt to ruin and rice out an rx7. If you must insist on doing this though, there would be alot involved. Since the lhd rx7 was not intended for rhd use you'd have to make new holes for the steering column, you'd have to move the abs to the other side or simply get rid of it, you'd have to move the cruise control to the other side if you was to keep that, ecu would have to be relocated and so on. In other words, it'd be a complete disaster imo. This has been brought up many many times so please try and use the search feature. Oh and while your at it, go ahead and make skylines lhd.

Of course it is possible, theoretically. Just remove the parts from the one car and put them on the other, or at worst case switch the entire fronts. You may find it is more difficult than expected, but who knows? I know of one company which does RHD conversions. While they may not have specific experience with an RX-7, they might be able to provide some general help:
Cross Over Conversions

Here is are threads with your exact question, though no definitive answer:
http://ausrotary.dntinternet.com/for...conversion+lhd
http://ausrotary.dntinternet.com/for...onversions+lhd
You could try re-posing the question on the ausrotary forum, or asking "Steve165" what he did.

Jesus Christ. Made a mental note never to start a thread in this forum again.
weaklink - Never asked anything about importation. What I asked about RHD conversions. And search my original post! Quote - "I searched, and I couldn't find it." Search for "RHD Conversion" and get back to me when you find something.
People who tell people to search forums **** me off to no end:
1) If you know the answer and feel like posting it, post it.
2) If you know where to find the answer and don't feel like typing it out, supply a link.
3) If you're lazy or just gonna be an ******* about it why post at all?
The "Search" button isn't God's gift to the world. It's a resource for those who want to find previous information. You exert more energy telling people to search than if you just don't post anything. I guess people do it cause it boosts their ego?

We do it because your wasting forum space. It costs money to run jackass. The search button is Gods gift. This HAS been talked about before, you apparently don't know what to search for otherwise you would have found it. We know you stated you searched, but you said you only searched for "RHD Conversion" Try expanding your vocab. to search. Even if it hasn't been talked about before on this forum, it has on others. Theres nothing diffrent from changing an rx7 to rhd then what it is to change a civic or what not. You can also try google. It's not that were to lazy to help you, your just to lazy to help yourself and want it spelled out for you. Besides, its not that hard to figure out what you'll need to change, simply think about it. I hope this helps in your quest for a USDM RHD Rx7.

If there's nothing different, why didn't you just say there was nothing different? That's all I wanted to know in the first place.
Too lazy to help myself? I've wasted a perfectly good day of my life on EPA and DOT websites and calling around Registered Importers, etc. etc. trying to figure out how to get this thing on the road. Soon as I started looking for RHD conversions, all I could get was the same bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. EXCUSE THE HELL OUT OF ME for wanting a clear answer.
And one last comment for good measure:
The thread takes up JUST as much space if you tell me to search as it does if you just give me an answer.
Congratulations TT_Rex_7, you win the PRIZE!!!!!

for example:
Thanks Ronamdt, I have an Uncle in the Import/Export buisness and well He will be handling alot of it. He has been doing it for a long time, so he knows alot of people to make the proccess alot smother and faster. I know for a fact I could get 1 FD in here with out even having to worry about DOT, EPA, or customs along with a few engines. Unfortunetly I refuse to sell anything due to the fact he could get in trouble.
Mahjik, to convert the car from RHD to LHD would be extreamly HARD and Irritable. I could do it by finding a wrecked LHD US.Spec FD and spend countless hours doing the conversion which I regret to say I would charge alot due to the fact it's not EASY =]
I would have to say at least 15+ hours to install emacuetly which I would charge probably 2000 just in the conversion not to mention the price of the dash and what not.
Heres what needs to be done to convert it over.
1. Need to switch rack and pionion stearing from JDM to US to move stearing wheele location to LHD,
2. Drill hole in fire wall for Wireing harness, Stearing Collem"SP?", Brake, Clutch, and Gas pedels.
3. Mount clutch slave cylinder, Brake boster/master cylinder, brake, clutch, and gas pedals.
4. Rewire vehicle to allow dash, spedo, tach, and everything else to work.
5. Reroute spedo cable
6. Replace all Moulding
7. Install stearing colum, Stearing wheele
8. Alot of other MISC things
9. PRAY TO GOD YOU DID EVERYTHING WRIGHT AND CAR STARTS AND DRIVES =\
10. Pull hair out when you forget to tighten a bolt and everything rattles and then go back and find bolt.
11. Finish job with half head of hair and vow never to do it again =]

if you're serious, you might also scan through those old posts to find screen names of members who seem like they know what they are talking about and PM them for more info. p.s. please don't try to flame people who are trying to help you.

1st, you just nearly doubled the bandwidth of this thread with 4 separate posts...
2nd, I really appreciate the info now but why didn't you just post that in the first place dude? Hope you realize why I was so hot about it in the first place. Your link led to an endless heated battle about who was right and wrong in the realm of importation, followed by TT_Rex_7's highly intellectual comments. Plus your first reply, whether you followed it up with a link or not, was just assholish.
Exactly TT_Rex. You pointed me in the right direction. And conveniently ego-coated it with smartass comments. Then you did guide me to other sources (aka - Search) when I already stated in my original post that I had already searched. You're s0o0o0 l33t u g0tt4 f14m3 th3 n00bs!! U pwNd m3!!!

I did! I simply followed my own link to extract the info that I cut and pasted to spoon feed you. 4 seperate posts? ever heard of post whoring? i do feel your pain, but please feel the pain of forum members that have been here a while and see the SAME questions asked over and over again.

Over and over again?!?!? You had to follow link after link of your own post to find someone that suggested the steps to a RHD conversion. The question was never asked!!!!
ARGH!!! I think the one thing that all 3 of us can agree on is that I need to leave as soon as possible.
Thanks again for the list.

Someone did it recently in SoCal, I believe he's from San Diego or maybe Long Beach. He bought a USDM RX-7 that had been hit in the front, and then chopped the frame and attached a JDM front clip. It seemed like the only good way to do it, assuming you've got the fabrication / welding skills.
I'm lazy and don't feel like searching for his thread right now, but he posted it less than one year ago, and it was either in the 3rd Gen section or the West Regional forum. Good luck with your search.
[edit: I think the guy's name is TechTrix : https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/anyone-have-rhd-fd-318459/ ]

Sadly, I am sometimes embarrased to be associated in a community with these people. I will apologise on their behalf for the immaturity and "ego-coated smartass comments" of the fellow members.
With certainty, the conversion process for all cars is not the same. This I know, having converted other cars including old RX-7. For example in the best situation the firewall and engine compartment is made for either configuration. All the holes drilled, and mounting positions exist for the opposite steering, etc. In straightforward manner the components are exchanged. In a worse case it is nearly completely different car, and you may find easier to change the entire front clip.
I do not know the answer to your question and neither do those who responded. I also searched in this forum and found several similar questions, but not very good aswers. The best advice is to contact members in the old posts and ask them for info.

Near as I can tell, the chassis is already set up for either side... hence many of the empty threaded holes and such. You will need a hell of alot of stuff to do the conversion though, and it might be worth importing a JDM wreck just to have all the parts in one place, even if you don't weld on a new clip.... I'd think you'd have to want this awfully bad to go through that kind of trouble and expense, with little to now benefit unless you're moving to England.
I hate pointless asked-a-million-times threads as much as the next person, but give this guy a break. The search function on this forum frankly sucks big time and takes forever, so i don't exactly blame people for soliciting information on the chance that someone happens to know exactly where it is.
