Thumbs up Review of RS*R Race Springs

Well, I havent seen anyone post a review of these springs yet. So I was skepticle about buying them from RX7store.net. I did a little reading online and found out that RS*R is the best selling spring company in Japan. I went ahead and ordered them, and they arrived at my door 6 days later (Thanks Jason).

Review:
The springs were a little difficult to install, as they did not sit exact with the shock mounts. I had to turn the springs a little so that the top shock mounts would line up with the holes on the body. I had to do this with every corner. Then, I took it to an alignment shop, and had the car aligned.

The springs are not too stiff for driving on the streets. I have been in other FD's with different spring makes, and most of them are pretty decent. The RS*R Race springs are very close to the ride the stock springs offer. When taking a corner hard, the car actually has almost no body roll though. The springs increase in hardness as the weight transfer increases. These springs are the best when it comes to ride quality, and stiffening up the ride a little. The car TRULY feels like a go-cart now.

The springs have a spring rate of 447lbs(front) and 391(back). They claim to lower the car .4 inches, but from my measurments, the car actually lowered .6 inches. I recommend these springs for someone who wants a stock ride quality, but who wants a spring stiff enough for autoXing. These springs are $215 from RX7store.net, it was cheapest place I found.

I should have some pics as soon as my friend Emails me them.

assuming you are running the stock tire and wheel set-up? If not, is there is any rubbing as this may be an alternative to the H&R springs for those of us running "plus" sizes.

There probably will be, Im currently running the Eibachs and I get rubbing but ONLY at FULL LOCK, any other turning and no rubbing occurs what so ever. I also have the stock tires. (Eibacks give you more of a drop)

Might also be helpful to post in the "Suspension/Wheels/Tires/Brakes" section. If somebody was searching for information on these springs, they would probably start there.

"The springs increase in hardness as the weight transfer increases ....."

The race spring pic in rx7store does show blue dual rate springs, with 2 different coil spacings:

http://www.rx7store.net/index.asp?Pa...ROD&ProdID=777

But this link suggests RS*R race springs are single rate, with constant coil spacing:

http://www.rs-r.com/products/suspens...ce_springs.php

Which looks like yours?

I just ordered the Eibachs but have not installed them yet...I might exchange them for these springs since they are less drop (good) and higher spring rate

the question is, will the higher spring rate overwork the shocks (I have Bilstein HDs) and be too stiff for the street? I guess this needs to be moved to the suspension section so the pros there can comment on it

Every spring on the planet gets stiffer the more you squish it. You mean these are rising rate springs?

I almost went with the RSR Race Springs.

I just switched rims/tires and I started rubbing with my Eibach setup. Granted, most of it is because of my tire size, but I wanted to try some different springs.

The problem with the Eibach's is that they lower the front a little more than advertised. I think the drop is about 1.2" in the front.

Unfortunately, I created a new problem for myself sticking the Tein S-Tech springs on the car. They dropped the front at least 1.5" if not more:

http://mahjik.homestead.com/files/fd...2/MVC-003F.jpg

I'm having my fenders rolled and if that doesn't do it, I'm grabbing the Ground Control Coilover kit and moving on.

I'm trying to avoid a coilover kit unless I absolutely have to.... But, I'm getting tired of switching springs. I hate suspension work.

BTW, with the stock wheel/tire setup, I loved my Eibachs. Great ride and VERY predictable handling on and off the track.

thanks mahjik....the drop on the Eibachs might be a bit much, reportedly the RS*Rs are only 0.4"....are you running 17s or 18s now?

like you said, I don't want to swap out springs more than once, it kind of a PITA from what I've heard

Mahjik:

What are you running as far as tire size and wheel offset?

Those are 17's. I'm using the stockers for my track days. I decided to try the Tein springs because of their spring rate and they were damn cheap.

If the RSR advertised drop is correct, that would work well for larger wheels up front without going coilover.

The offset is +43 with a 17x9 wheel. The tires are 255/40/17. Had I went with a staggered setup with less meat up front, it wouldn't be an issue. Oh well, live and learn.

Thanx for the info.

Do you have a a pic that shows the car as whole? That lowered look you got going on looks really good.

Actually that's how I want my car to look. The extra meat on tire side wall (opposed to 18's with 35 side wall) gives off a don't f-with me look...

That's my car on the right, and RTS3GEN's monster on the left.

wings on these cars always look like such an tacked-on afterthought to me....I don't get it....I don't want ANYTHING that associates me with the mindless rice crowd

to each his own I guess...lovin my "wingless" FD

My wing, the Racing Beat Type I, was on the car when I bought it. The previous owner went Racing Beat crazy with a number of their products (and that was years ago as I've had the car 6+ years).

I like it. It's a little wider than the R1 wing, which is why I like it. I'm not sure if it adds a lot of stability or not, but I haven't had any handling problems at the track yet hitting speeds over 130 on the straights (or on the highway).

The other car has the '99 Spec wing on it, and he does adjust it when at the track for more downforce as needed (which is the reason he got it).

interesting that properly designed cars (e.g. Ferrari Enzo) don't need a wing for downforce...it's the band aid approach

Yep, you pay $700k or so for a car, it should! You can't expect supercar performance at bargin (normal people) car prices. Just ain't happening.

However, the JGTC seems to think wings are needed.

Good luck trying to fit underbody venturis and proper duct exits in a mass produced unibody car with body and chassis panels made of metal.

"go get my learn on", huh?

spoken like a true intellectual go back to fifth grade you moron

it's not that simple....the factories are always playing around with aerodynamics and downforce....Schumacher ran wingless in 2003 fyi and there are several wingless Ferraris and Porsches....for an all out track car that is capable of 170-200+ it's a serious issue, for a street car it's essentially a non issue and I have to laugh when I see the ricers, or really ANYONE for that matter, with a wing on a street car

Ricers yes, but what about if its a street/track car? Rare I know, but what if?
