Resurfacing housings, is it worth it?

I am having a hell of a time trying to find someone to resurface or lap the housing as it is called. There is some minor pitting on the rear housing, and well hell I want to make sure everything goes smoothly so I want to lap all the housings so that the engine is somewhat in a fresh condition after reassembly. Everything is within tolerance. My question is does this degrade engine performance, and if you have had this done what was your experience.

I would sure hate to have to buy new ones but would if I had to. They are expensive if you haven't took the time too look I believe for all three sets it's about $1000. And at that point I would just opt to go with a reman. Since hell I would be in it way over the cost of a reman.

Thanks again,
L

First off the original surface is nitrided to make it even harder than normal cast iron. Lapping is OK and should be done on every rebuild.

Some say taking off more than .003" is too much due to reducing the amount of nitride in the surface. Some say even more taken off is OK since the bare or less nitrided cast iron is still a lot harder than the side seals and oil seals.

the pre rx7 engines arent nitraded, and they did ok. they do wear the side housings faster than a comparable nitraded motor, but not drastically so

talk to rotary resurrection he is based in Texas. I don't know if he can do it, but he is a hell of a great guy, that knows tons about rotary engine, and I'm sure he could point you to the right direction. I like to think of him as the rotary master, lol. Or you could try racing beat as the fellas mentioned, I am going to have mine done at Pineapple racing based in Portland, Oregon.
