Question restricter pills...

im trying to find a cheap way to lower the boost down without getting a boost controller.

i am getting boost creep up to 14 psi now. can i take out one or both restricter pills to lower the boost down? and if i do this will it lower the boost down to the point where it is gutless? i would like to lower it down to around 10psi if possible.

i have tried searching this topic but i havent found if i can take out one pill(wastegate pill?) or if i need to remove both.

i still have the stock ecu.
downpipe, high flow cat, racing beat exhaust, greddy intake, efini y pipe.

any suggestions?

If you remove the pills it shoulf take it down to 7 PSI. I would port your wastegate though if I were you to protect against creep.

A quick fix would be to add some restriction into the exhaust. Temporarily re-installing the stock cat will do the trick, as will a restrictor plate.

The pills won't stop you from creeping. Even with the pill out, I bet you will find it creeping into the danger zone. Changing your pills could help control your spiking and what level it will try to run your car at. Creep is when your wastegate tries to open to divert exhaust energy away from the turbo but it is unable to divert enough. Your turbo then keeps spooling faster and faster and you are unable to stop it.

There are only two things that can stop your creep. Port your wastegate or add more restriction into your exhaust. You can add more restriction by putting your stock midpipe back it, your buying an exhaust restrictor plate and installing that. Its like an exhaust gasket that you install between your downpipe and catback but it has a much smaller hole in it in. Something around 2.25-2.5 diameter.

if i dont do something now i dont know how much longer the engine will hold out.
i am amazed at how strong it has performed so far, as it is still the stock engine(40K)

the car runs incredibly rich and im sure that is why is hasnt bit the dust yet.
one thing i have always wondered if the fuel is cutting out, as i have not felt anything unusual at high boost levels as far as power delivery(wish i has an a/f gauge), i thought the fuel cut was supposed to happen at 12psi.

i know i am pushing my luck, and i should get a boost controller now...

by removing the pills from the wastegate and precontrol lines or dialing your bc down to the min will not solve your problem, but your car should not creep over 10.5 psi. that should keep you in the safe zone for now. also, stay away from the cool weather

First of all, your car may not have any pills. Some of the 94's & 95's have turbos with the restrictors built into the nipples. If this is the case, your prespool & wastegate lines are already open. If your car has pills, I suggest removing the wastgate pill, and installing a manual boost controller. If you are getting creep, a boost controller will help some, but won't get rid of the problem. Here's a link for a cheap functional manual boost controller. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ON THE PRESPOOL LINE!!!! LEAVE IT STOCK!!!!

the pills are in the lines.

what about the fuel cut that happens at 12psi, can u feel anything when this happens, such as the engine cutting out or hesitating?

Yeah, it feels like it just looses all power. You will definitely notice it. The fuel cut isn't exactly 12, it depends on what rpm you are at.

ya i felt it today in third gear
im gonna take out the wastegate pill tomorrow and see where im at.
hopefully that gets me by for awhile until boost controller comes.

but im afraid the boost controller wont cure the creep problem...
i really dont want to put a restricter plate in the exhaust or port the wastegate.

A boost controller will not cure your creep problem. You have three options:

(1) restrictor plate
(2) port wastegate
(3) blow engine

Which will it be?

i was curious to see what messing with the wastegate pill would do.
i first just took the pill out and it just stayed at 8psi, with no creep really at all at the higher rpms. however going from 14psi to 8psi just sucked, so i drilled out the wastegate pill with a drill bit and put it back in, i got lucky and it maxed out at around 10psi, and i still dont have any noticeable creep.

creep doesnt usually happen in lower gears, mind you. its when you start hitting mid to high 3rd. one of these times your not going to be watching you b-gauge on a cold day and its goona do it again possibly ending your motor right then and there

took it out tonight in the cool summer air, and there was still almost no creep, even in third and fourth gear. i know i will need to watch the boost carefully, especially in cooler weather with the recent exhaust and intake modifications, but it is a big step down from 14/15psi, which is fun but just plain stupid. i believe the current set up will get me by for now until its time for 3mm rebuild and single turbo.
