Replacing Belts
I went down to my local Mazda dealer to pick up a new set of belts. $55 just for the Alternator belt, and another $35 for the A/C belt! After the guy looked up the prices he told me "If I was you I'd just go to somewhere else and get an aftermarket belt, but don't tell anyone I said that." So I took his advice and tried all the local auto parts stores, but of course no one stocks them. What are you guys using for replacement belts? Anyone see anything wrong with using an aftermarket belt vs. Mazda OEM? TIA.

I think Goodyear makes the belt as well. I don't think it matters much between OEM and aftermarket belts. I got mine replaced by the dealer and it says Mitsubishi on it. If you can save a few bucks, call around a few shops to see if anyone has it for less.
The dealer prices sound about right for OEM, BTW.

Thanks for the help as always guys. I'll check with Ray, and if he can't help I'll look for the Goodyear's locally. Does anyone know the OEM or Goodyear part number?

The Napa belt p/n's you called out refer to an A/C belt and a P/S belt, repectively, but the A/C and P/S run off the same belt. What's the p/n for the Alternator and Air pump belt?

The front belt is for the Power Steering. The back belt is for alternator. One of the two belts run the airpump but that doesn't really matter.
The Mazda PN, prices at Gallerygroup.com are:
Alt N2Z1-18-381-9U Manual $46, N2Z1-18-381 Auto $26
P/S N3A1-15-907 $22
I saw the Goodyear belts today on someone's car. They look pretty solid and slightly thicker than the stock ones. The bottom side of the belt contacting the pulley has a tire-like tread. How cool!

I went to advance auto parts to puchase belts. They were lower cost, but the alternator belt was also wider than stock so would not fit properly. I finally went to Mazda and picked up the alternator belt for $57.
I thought installation would be a breeze, but I could not get the new alternator belt installed - even after lowering the alternator all the way to the block. It was then I discovered the adjuster and pivot bolts on the air pump. Removing the airbox allowed access to these bolts, then installation was easy.
BTW, does anyone have a guide to tightening? I would hate to overstress the water pump.

Called Mazda and prices were the same. The guy also said the same thing, so I called Discount Auto parts and they had both around 11 for one and 10 for the other. Daco Brand. They seem find but please tell me if they are substandard in any one's opinion. It still pisses me off that the gaskets for the downpipe were 49 and 27 bucks respectively. Rip off bastids. bash: or I oughta give em one of these
Oh well....... WTF.......I feel better........

Dayco is the one. They are okay. Belts are sandwich layers of rubber, reinforced fiberglass or metal strands. Kind of like a tire. Saying that all belts are the same is like saying all tires are the same. I think the Gatorbacks are good but I am not sure about Dayco. They are okay but may not last as long.

okay, i just checked my belts. looks as if they were reused from the mazda motor that was put in by who other than MAZDA. *** holes. with that being said, they have reused the spark plugs, wires, belts, and im looking to see what else. im sure that they found a way to reuse the silicon too. okay, a bit off topic. on the topic of belts though, i know what happens if my belt on the honda breaks(interference head). our 7's dont have timing belts not heads. what would happen if the belts break??? from what i see we just lose all accessories, and possibly have a chance at over heating since the water pump would not be working. is that the jist of it?
