Replacement options for ashtray... any ideas?

Hey guys. I don't smoke (who would in these beautiful cars anyways...) & hate having the 'smokers package' ashtray & cigarette lighter. I am just going to find a plug for the lighter (so I can still use it as a power source) but am not sure what to do about the ashtray. I have seen that there is an optional armrest/coin holder that came with some JDM FDs... but those are expensive... & my arm rests behind this (I'm tall, so seat is all the way back).

So... I decided to pull the ashtray out, & discovered that without the ashtray unit in... the space is a nice little storage space (good for extra keys... change... that sort of thing). So what I am wondering, has anybody ever seen (or made) an insert that would take the place of the ashtray, yet leave the majority of the space availible? I like how it functions without the ashtray installed... but the area looks unfinished. Maybe somebody simply made a trim peice (that just goes around the edges) so that the area looks finished, yet the whole space is still exposed.

If this explanation is unclear... please say so & I'll try harder. It's somewhat hard to put into words what I am thinking. Let me know guys, thanks.

its a part thats readily available and only cost $89...other than that or the ashtray you will have to fabricate your own type of custom cover

I notched the inside of the ashtray to hold my PFC commander. The screen is about the same size as the opening. As far as the cigarette lighter, I took it out and put a digital temp gauge in it's place, but I think I'm going to take it out and put a fuel pressure gauge instead since I already can monitor temps with the PFC commander. Just some ideas if you still want to use them for something funtional.

The armrest bit is great, good for keeping keys etc in. Id get thet. You also get a plug type thing for FD in the non smoker FD set.

IIRC, the "non-smoking" package was never offered on the North American models. So all of these are for the RHD cars (opening from the right-side). Despite the compromise, I really like mine.

Right on...

FYI... I have one, and I love it. Though it's made for RHD, it fits really well, though it opens from right to left. I love it and use it a lot, especially as an arm/elbow rest for shifting

The JDM armrest peice looks nice... if you're short(er). I'm 6-4... so my arm rests well beyond the ashtray area. Oh well.

I've got the JDM bin/ashtray - also being tall, I don't use it as an armrest, but it's GREAT as a little storage bin. I keep change, mints, and little odds and ends in it. Just ignore the "armrest" bit and get with the "storage bin" bit .

I trimed the ashtray off leaving the sliding lid part, I did this to fit the PC COmmander under. You could do this to make a storage bin, just lift of the cover to access .. stock looking otherwise.

Warning the lid and tray are made of bakelite, very hard brittle plastic .. I used a dremell saw to cut, go slow

LOL, I think you'll like it.
Just as a side note... mine didn't come with the little opaque orange window that allows light in as the ashtray had. I just drilled three small holes (1/8") in mine opposite of the light.

Do you have the JDM bin/ashtray on a USDM?

17 years later....

Also, the armrest doesn't drop in perfectly flush on LHD center consoles. At least mine doesn't. The edges stick up.

You just have to hit it with your purse, old buddy.

In all seriousness, for those who drive their cars and lean on the armrest, over time it'll depress down a bit and it looks like it belongs there.

Yeah, sorry! I was putting mine in over the weekend and realized it didn’t fit properly. I tried researching to see if it was error on my part, but I guess it’s not supposed to fit?

It's not perfect on a LHD car but it's decent. Over time it will fit better.
