Releasing Clutch from Throwout Bearing
I have seen several questions concerning releasing the throwout bearing from the clutch. As most of you know the RX has a pull clutch this is accomplished by using a release bearing clasping ring. On the end of the ring is a type of snap ring. This snap ring rides on the throwout bearing in a circular groove which keeps the clasping ring joined to it for clutch actuation. When the clutch pedal is pushed the throwout bearing/clasping ring is pulled toward the pressure plate. On the backside of the pressure plate is a circular race which acts as a keeper for the clasping ring/snap ring, locking it to the throwout bearing groove and activating the clutch.
To disengage the clasping ring from the throwout bearing you must make sure the ring has not moved back locking the snap ring in the pressure plate. You can do this by using a screwdriver on the front of the clasping ring flange and keeping it pushed up against the pressure plate. Then using another screwdriver carefully pry the throwout bearing away from the clasping ring mechanism. The snap ring will release since it can expand out of the throwout bearing groove. It works sweet and is quick once you get your srewdrivers placed correctly.
The second way is to remove the six fasteners from the pressure plate by rotating the flywheel. Rotating the flywheel can be done with a screwdriver against the ring gear. If you have a lightweight flywheel you cannot do this as the flywheel is not threaded and the pressure plate fasteners have nuts on the backside you cannot reach through the inspection port.
Sorry if the terminology is not correct but the principle will work.
Good Luck,
André
