af gauge is just a voltmeter that displays the voltage coming from the o2 sensor. af gauges are only as accurate as the o2 sensor, which is not very accurate. o2 sensors give 0-1 volts depending on the a/f mixture, and are tuned to be accurate only for stoichiometric (14.7) af mixture and at certain temperatures. It will show the difference between 14.6 and 14.7 easier than 12.0 and 12.1. The difference between af meters will be their percision, for example, one gauge may show 0.1 volt increments, while another may show 0.01 volt increments.

I have an autometer af meter. I the blinking lights look cool and it tells me generally weather my car is running very lean or very rich. I think that it is worth the $50 I spent on it. But it is almost useless for tuning, because the o2 sensor is not accurate enough.

If you want a voltmeter with a high resolution, then there are small LCD voltmeters which display the voltage to 1/1000th of a volt and are relatively unexpensive. I have also heard that there is a company that can modify the autometer gauge to only show for a particular voltage range, and thus making it more percise.

I hope that this information is helpful.
