Rear Diff Issues.

Rear Diff Issues.
These tests where done in front of my house. Not getting out of first gear or reverse.
Seams when I drive straight the car is fine, some unwanted noises but the car will move. When I start turning the car, it looses all forward momentum. Clutch is out and giving it gas, but the car wont go forward. I cant tell for sure if the drive shaft is moving, but I believe it is. Now the car wont go forward, turn or go in reverse. After rocking the car and putting it back into reverse you will feel a pop and then I can get the car to move in 1st and reverse. There are a few other noises of what seams to be metal clucking in the rear diff. Sometimes with the car in neutral, you cant push it forward.
My guess, is that its something to do with the limited slip. Is it possible my fluid is low? Or the rear diff phucked? Or am I wrong and its a possible tranny issue??
I am planning on draining the fluid and taking the back off the diff. Maybe ill know more tomorrow.
Thanks for any input.

First thing I would do is drain the fluid and look for metal flakes, you can take a magnet and see if anything sticks to it from the old oil. It sounds like you might have a bald spot on your ring gear, which if that is the case you will want to do a full over haul of the diff, metal flakes in bearings are bad. But first thing drain the diff fluid see what it looks like.
Good Luck

The last rear diff i had go out in a Firebird, had a magnet.( I could be wrong, it was 15 years ago) Is there a magnet in the rear diff of the FD? Thats why i wanted to take the back cover off to look. If there isn't Ill just drain the oil and look. IF there isn't any metal flakes I will fill it back up, and hope for the best.
Is there an additive or treatment type oil for the rear diff?
How much HP are the rear diffs good for?

I'm guessing that as soon as you start to drain the fluid, you will know. It will probably look like liquid silver coming out of the diff. The end of the drain plug is magnetic, so you'll probably see some chunks on it too. You can also stick a magnet (one of those one you use to pick up that nut you dropped down into the engine bay that you can't reach) into the diff and find a bunch more pieces.

I thought there was a magnet, just forgot it was the plug.... I remembered when I took it off.
I had 2 teeth on the plug. Surprisingly there wasn't a lot of shavings that I could see. Then again I didn't drain it completely
I will have more time this weekend to take off the cover and take a look at the gears.
