Rattling Problem

I've recently bought a 1993 Rx-7.

I used to drive a 350Z and because it didn't seem like it was for me, I sold it and bought a friend's stock Rx-7. He used it only as a daily driver, but because his babies were growing up, he needed to settle down for a family sized minivan (lulz).

I am now driving a 70k mileage, nonsmoking, very clean, and stock rx-7 and i must say, the car rattles!

It may be because the door panels are slightly loose, but even so, I've never felt as uncomfortable as my previous sports car. Compared to newer cars, it sounds as if I'm driving a lawn mower inside my car with the rattling to back it up.

Is this normal for all rx-7's? Or what can i do to make my ride as smooth as it was when driving a brand new sports car?

They say replacing the pillow ball bushings can reduce clunking noises in the suspension.
Are your shocks all good? no leaks or anything? my hks coilovers were very noisy untill i got them rebuilt...

I would say definitly interior panels are clunking. but even then I feel as if I'm on top of a vibrator, which as a guy, is not a good thing..

maybe a sex change would help lol j.k .

well if they are interior panels it could need new clips . screws tightened. i mean basic stuff your just going to have to get in there and tighten things down . maybe someone removed interior and didnt put back in properly .

well also remember your comparing the feel of a 350z (comfort sport car) to a made for street track car (fd3s)

motor trend 1992 "the rx7 sticks to the road like tar to a rocker panel"

I have a 94 touring and yeah, there are a bunch of squeaks and rattles. You can track down a lot of them with patience, but it is never going to sound like a newer sports car.

Rear hatch is a problem on 93's. The hinges and hold down adjustment plus get new rubber pieces for the sides. The hood typically squeeks (not rattles) until you do the fix. If I think of other common rattles I'll post. The pillow ***** is a clunk, not a rattle, but probably needs it at your mileage. Maybe the stock engine mounts are giving out too. You know it's bad when you just can't remember all the things you've replaced over the years!

If it bothers you that much, take the door panels off and apply some dampening material like B-Quiet:

Sound deading in the doors devinitely helps. The doors themselves probably need tightening or some tabs might need replacing. A good deal of the rattles comes from plastic pieces rubbing other plastic pieces. The door trim is a great example. While the door panels are off, tighten everything you can find. Add washers where necessary and black silicone can aid the plastic to plastic issue.

The hood and rear deck can be adjusted to reduce the squeaks/rattles including the simple tricks of adding electrical tape to the lock tab on the rear hatch.

There are plenty of threads on rattle elimination, just have to use the advanced search to find them.

Good Luck!

Oh Yeh, the defroster vents at the front windshield can be another source of plastic noise. Ray has the replacements for a reasonable price or you can try glue on any stubborn point.

Don't knock it till you try it! A good prostate massage is nothing to be ashamed of

Back to the squeking... All the interior panels are held on with metal spring clips. Over the years and if they have been removed often they can loose there "springyness" This cause them to move back and forth a very tiny amount. BUT when it is metal to metal it sounds like nails on a chalkboard. My rear hatch plastic was really bad with this. As well the hatch latch is a problem for me. A little tape around the loop works for me.( as the loop has worn away where the latch hooks on)..Same with the hood for me.

Others have listed other culprits like the vent plastics.
