My transmission has always made a quiet but audible noise in neutral with the clutch out - but if this is something new for you to hear then I would guess that is not the noise you are hearing.

And I agree diagnosing a noise in person is hard enough much less over the internet.
Myself also has this grinding sound when clutch is out. My clutch pedal vibrates and the point of engagement is way up, further away from the floor, which seems unusual. I also have a new stock clutch but this didnt make the noise go away! Tranny has been through some thrashed128000kms! How much work is needed to replace bearings, forks or input shaft? Total rebuild?

It's not an ACT thing. I have the stock clutch on my FD and it does the same thing. Whoever said it was a faint "cawwwllllwlwllllwwllll" type of growling sound said it best. Great post, I had been wondering about this for some time but never asked. Glad someone brought it up!

Other than that, though, my clutch operates just beautifully. No vibration, consistant engagement position, nice and smooth. I think this noise is totally unrelated to other clutch issues.

I hope this input helps.

^^^ i think that was me, im the cawwlllllll sound guy LOL

but yeah, i know this isnt my thread but since this is a clutch thread that has brought many intelligent owners, i want to ask a question related to this.

now like i said before, i have a ACT clutch, stage 2, recently put in, maybe 2k ago, stock flywheel. car has 69k.

anyway, i noticed some minor problems ever since the warm weather started.

if i drive the car for a certain period of time, the clutch will act funny. when i go to work which the drive is only 15 min max, the clutch is absolutely perfect and normal. but long drives, 45 min or more, the clutch will act funny. first off, if im trying to wot in some gear and i hit the clutch, my rpms will bounce higher.. i noticed this cause i was on the highway about 2 weeks ago and i was in 3rd gear (i love 3rd gear ) and i wanted to get going a bit so i hit it til about 7k, i hit the clutch to bring it to neutral for my next exit and when i hit the clutch, my rpms bounced from 7k to almost 8k.. and my foot was completely off the gas!!! i got worried a bit.

also, if im in the city driving, after driving for a long time, it will be harder to put it into any gear from a stop. if im moving, the gears shift perfectly.. only when im in a standstill, its harder to put it in 1st or reverse.. and one time it didnt even want to go into any gear (i made a post about this before). im thinking its maybe the gear oil im using? cause the oil im using now cant withstand the heat?

i asked around, local speed shops and they told me it can be anything, they said the ACT clutch could be improperly installed, it could be warped, could be my pilot or throwout bearing..

what do you guys think?

thanks

Mine has a similar noise, but I don't think from your description it's coming from the same place. Mine is due to a tranny brace I installed and comes from under the shifter. And also does it ANYTIME the clutch is engaged... moving or not. I didn't see where you mentioned if you had a tranny brace or not, so I thought I'd mention it as an option.

I'll bring this topic back because my car does it too. When its cold, it sounds like a car off the Jetsons but it goes away after warm up. THe sound also goes away when the clutch is in. Now, the way I understand it is, the throwout bearing only operates when the pedal is depressed(unless the freeplay is out of adjustment and its constantly contacting the fingers). Wouldn't this mean that a bad throwout bearing should only make noises when the pedal is down? This leads me to believe that its the pilot bearing going bad. Its able to make noise when there is no load on the engine and the engine power is not linked to the transmission by the input shaft. When the pedal is depressed, the input shaft is only supported on the transmission side by a bearing and on the engine side by the pilot bearing. If the pilot bearing is bad, the input shaft will bounce around. However, when the pedal is up, the input shaft is now being supported by the splines on the clutch disc and therefore, is no longer able to wiggle around. This makes sense to me as to why its making that noise.

I have the same problem as everybody else. When I had my stock clutch it didnt make any noise but then when I put the ACT SS clutch and RB lightened flywheel it started making that noise. But like someone else said I wouldnt worry too much about it.

My OS clutch does it only when depressed. If the bearing is wearing or the incorrect size it will do this.

I did only read half of the first page so if its fixed then cool..
