I have a question... been searching around for a while but found nothing....
If I put a larger Koyo or Fluidyne radiator on my 7, will I still need the fans? Or does the larger size make up for the fans not being there? Should I get fans or not?

 

You still need the fans. The fans are there for when the car is not moving (or not moving fast enough) to bring air through the radiator to cool the liquid. Without the fans, you have hardly any cooling unless the car is in motion.

 

What on earth do you mean show me some numbers? My koyo produces the same coolant temps that my stock one did. If it didnt i would surely be concerned. If you were running without a thermostat that is your problem, not your koyo. You might want to make sure in the future that what you are doing to your car is actually for the better. Other than possibly (and i'm not 100% on this) running evans coolant there is no reason at all, to ever remove the thermostat in your cooling system. Why did you do that?

Personally I prefer the Fluidyne to Koyo due it ease of installation. This is primarily b/c the Fluidyne isnt as thick as the Koyo, but I've had zero coolant temp issues over the years in various types of driving, to include roadracing in the Texas summers. (stock R1 dual oil coolers and deleted a/c and p/s, and yes, I kept my fans installed )

You're def going to need the fans still!!!

I blew the fuse for my fans this summer and QUICKLY shot up to 100+ during light driving and some traffic (I had *just* picked up a cute little blond chick for a tour around town too! had to swing home and get my junker for it ).

This was in England, where people start complaining about it being too hot when the temp hits 80.. You'd be toast w/o working fans in no time unless you can maintain highway speeds the entire trip, even then it would get hairy..

Hey goodfella U say that the Fluidyne is not any worse than the Koyo? I might be buying a fluidyne then instead of a koyo....
I dunno... i've been reading a lot of things lately that Koyo has been making some bad quality units... and that fin design isnt the best and stuff...... Seems to me like the company has grown too big to care to much for the quality.... =( shame.....

What about Mishimoto radiators? They recently got some mishimoto rads on rx7store.com.... any feedback?

They're cheap, effective and will bolt right up to either a KOYO or Fluidyne designed for the FD. No reason for you NOT to use them.
Fluidyne is 150% larger than stock. Koyo is 200% larger. That does NOT automatically mean you should go get KOYO. I think what Goodfella was saying is that the Fluidyne is sufficient, and generally has far less issues with fitment than KOYO. There are two different KOYOs too. One is an 'N'-Flow and IIRC, about the same price as Fluidyne. The other is usually cheaper, but possibly not as efficient.

We prefer the Koyo over the Fluidyne. We have had customers with highly modified cars that have had cooling issues with the Fluidyne, that were remedied by installing the Koyo. Specifically cars with Greddy 3-row FMIC's. For the record we do not have any problems with Koyo fitment. Additionally the petcock drain on the Fluidyne is worthless, after using it a couple times it needs replacing.

Hey.... What about the MAZDASPEED aluminum radiator? Is it any good? Is it better than Koyo? not as good? just as good?

 

I read that the Mspeed one is worse than the koyo and fluidine. I have a fluidine (installed at IRP) and it works great for me. If you are having problems with heat just turn your AC on to force the fan to run at full force. Problem solved.

 

The Mazdaspeed/AWR/Ron David radiator works GREAT for my LS1 in my FD. Came in the car when I bought it.

Where did you read that? Unless I missed something, the Mazdaspeed is one of the better ones out there. The core is probably one of the better designs and is very efficient. Search for more.

 

if you hare planing to use an after market SMIC (or have one) don't go with the Koyo as you will have fitment issues (M2 or PFS SMIC)... The fluidyne will work just fine.

mmm I may be wrong. I think I read that in scc magazine but it may have been the IC.

 

Mazdatrix sells a stock aluminum replacement rad. I'm not sure how good it is but this is the one I'm considering. If I end up getting one I'll let you know about it.

 

So what about these copper core ones? where can i find one, and what are temps and weight differences over alluminium.

 

Well I cracked my radiator yesterday , and went and bought a koyo . but I realized that its
quite a bit wider then the stock one . and now I'm a little worried about fitment with my stock IC

before I try and isntall it and risk bending some of the fins and then getting issues returning it . should I return it and get thinner one

Also it will be street used , but also tracked . and auto-x'd
