Thanks bud! you are always a big help.
about the clearance, once everything is bolted down if things are still closer than you like, an engine torque brace helps with the engine movement a lot...as if you didn't know, but I don't remember if you have one or not on that awful track car of yours
I only mention it, because my turbo sits close (not as close as the pic shown) to that same fender brace (I even went from a 1.15 A/R to a 1.00 A/R to give some more clearance), but the engine torque brace keeps it off. It's a feed brace.
I don't have any good pics with the 1.00, due to A/C lines...here is one with the 1.15
I don't have an issue...and don't know if there would have been one?!?!

good info, and yep, the car lready has a tq brake....ill know more about the clearance issues once i can do a 'hard' install test (tighten bolts/nits down)...but first i have to get the new wg setup done to the manifold and get the wg plumbed back toe th dp. then get the stuff coated... so its gonna be a while.
#53
yeah, I'm not happy to be pulling the car apart again...but I need to plumb the WG back in(and recoat...D'oh...and wrap this time.) and wire the electric air pump, fuel vapor solenoid and WI solenoid valve...it's already been awhile...and its going to be awhile. autocross starts soon, so there's my motivation.

i have a question to the guys with the r85, i also have the turbo and am getting it installed next week. my question is everyone seems to be getting the wg plumbed back into the downpipe, i was going to vent it to the atmosphere , is there a reason i shouldn't besides noise - i already received 4 tickets this year for too loud exhuast

just noise for me, cuz i drive the car to/from the tracks..... there may be an issue in tuning if the wb sensor is the tailpipe kind, since the wg will start messing up the flow that comes out of the tailpipe

Do you guys really feel the lack of torque on a race track? I was hoping I wouldn't in the future...
Only in that, since a lap around the track involves a range of RPM's and gears, you can constantly stay above 3krpm or so given you drop another gear no matter what the turn....
With that in mind, I'm very interested in turbo's that spool faster (close to stock twins type of powerband) with a good mid-range powerband. Something more usable than quarter mile "All top end" stuff...so I anticipate your results Damian!

I have a similar car and Damian will have no trouble driving on the same track with the new C6 Z06. Current Z06s are much slower as in a few seconds per lap.
Excellent choice of turbos BTW.
Like you said it's all about HEAT. At 12psi that turbo will be in a coma and your *** will feel like it's riding on the front bumper of a freight train. Then turn the boost up to 15lbs and say a prayor to the brake Gods

Sorry for the confusion.
I was bringing up the subject of the 13b's lack of torque vs. an LS1, whereas they differ and how it affects both cars on the track.
I always thought/assumed that while the 13b may not have as much torque at lower rev's as the LS1; since you are always moving when on a road course you can simply drop a gear to find a good powerband to exit a turn with..etc.

yes phoenix, your right, you just keep the rpm higher, plus your always on boost and lag is not really a big issue when your road racing and always in teh higher rpm range.

A lot depends on the track. I think the C6 Z06 will spank any "streetable" FD on a large high speed track but perhaps not on a tight track.
I run a 300rwhp FD at a lot of track events with the Porsche Club. On tighter tracks I can usually post a top ten time even against tons of 400hp plus porsches. However, on a very open track, like the California Speedway which incorporates most of the high speed oval, I get truly spanked by the more powerful cars.
Face it guys, the 500hp, 3100lb C6 Z06 is going to being very, very fast. Of course... it's gonna cost near $70K. I think I'll keep my FD for a while anyway!

>>I agree but it won't be anywhere near a 400 rwhp fd that weighs 2600lbs.
and that is exactly what my goal is, and should have no trouble getting there ;-)
>>Also consider the pilot (Damian)
exactly, if we put me in the equation, then we need a 500 rwhp FD at 2000 lbs to compete against a stock civic hatch back (cx model) :-) heheheh...thanks for the wonderful compliment Fritz, made my ego blow up a few notches.
>>(Damian) goes to the track 1 or 2 times a month at the minimum.
ahh yes, i have become a track junkie, but hey, i only started a few years ago so I need all I can get to catch up with these guys that have been runnig for years out there!!! actually its less to do with that and more to do with me beign hoplessy addicted to driving road tracks, dont care if im slow ...fast...whatever, the perma-grin i get in the drivers seat is there no matter what :-)
...and its winter here now, ... no track nothing...nada...I resort to friggin indoor karting to get my driving fix HAHAHH
>>The only competition he'll have will come from GT3 cup cars, competition vipers etc.....
dang, now im gettin nervous 8-)
>>IOW race cars driven by very experienced drivers.
i must admit that in my last few events (where I finally started to 'get' it) I have been top 3 fastest. This was with full on track cars and some serious drivers....and me running my mega 12 psi boost (hahahaha)
Most of that is the car, a small amount is me finally figuring out what the car can actually do and 'alllowing' the car do its thing (ok, ok, maybe...just maybe I have a hint of skill showing ...maybe....doubt it ...heheh).
The bottom line is,...... the FD is best bang for the buck for a road track car....nothing comes close for the perfromance vs money. .... and this car is over 10 years old!!!
I love it ...I love it...I love it.... :-)
..and im coming over there fritz, i dunno when ...but you better be ready to mentor me around VIR next year so i know where the heck im going around that track.

No problem. Try to make it to either the Track Quest event or the Chin Motorsports event. Lots of track time and very laid back
Best measure of progress or where you stand as a driver is lap times If your running close to or better than the same times as the leaders in NASA big bore then your driving.

sounds good, once the clubs start getting their calendars finalized we can try to organize some events where we all get together and have some fun.

are these times for different tracks posted somwhere?

I did get your e-mail on cameras Damian. Thanks.
I agree that the FD is a great car and thanks to its leight weight and great handling is still very competitive even 10 years later. A real bargain too! I always get a bit of satifaction that I can sometimes lap faster than someone in a car that costs many times more than mine. (I bought mine used for $7500 and put about $5000 of mods into it)
I'm usually the fastest non trailered cars at Porsche Club events. But let me tell you... some of those Porsches are FAST and the drivers VERY SKILLED. I'm sometimes in the top ten but never anywhere near the top five. But then some are of them are driving dedicated track cars that weigh around 2500lbs and have 600+ hp!

So I got my car from KD today. No pics right now because I'm exhausted from driving all day.
I do have to say the fitment was just fine. Skip and Dave had the car on the dyno a little and they did boost it some, they said they could not beleive how fast the turbo spooled for its size. Everything came together very very well with my setup and I'm pleased. Although I probably won't be able to post any dyno numbers for about a month maybe less because I have to take the ECU out and send it back to Microtech for some minor reprogramming before dynoing and that takes two weeks and I still have to break it in and add a few misc. parts that I have yet to recieve but so far so good, except for a little flooding episode along the side of the interstate.
