No cruise on wheel, my old base had cruise. Muffler looks funky so does the F bumper. Check for the pass side oil cooler. The Rest seems right to be an R-1. Bought mine with 15K miles for 13K $$$ a year before the TF&TF.

looks like an R1. has a R1 strut bar. R1 spoiler. black high-stick cloth interior (R1 characteristic). no sun-roof (R1 characteristic). No cd-player (another R1 characteristic).
the only thing that bothers me is the cruise control (although, i didnt see the cruise control cable in the picture of the engine bay). R1s are not supposed to have a cruise control.

I looked at an R2 a few weeks ago..ad said 'cruise cntrl' but the car was definately an R2: it had no cruise, 2 oil coolers, everything. I think the dealers try to sneak one by on un-informed buyers, or either they really don't know anything about the car.
Looks like an R1 to me...

Ok, Now pay attention.
You are correct that the AD states that it has cruise control, but when you look at the dash (above the A/C controls) & steering wheel......
No Switches !!!!
I would say this is a dead give away that it doesn't have it.
Without verifing the 2nd oil cooler, you can't be Positive that it's an R1, but all the other items are correct, like.....
Front strut bar, Front spoiler (with brake ducts), Rear spoiler, Cloth seats.
Plus all the stuff it shouldn't have...
Sunroof, Bose stereo, Auto trans, Cruise Control ....
Call the # & ask the salesmen to email you a close up picture of the L/H & R/H ducts, below the turn signals.
Why anyone would want an R1 is beyound me!!

It sure looks like an R1.Seems like A good deal.
I gave 13,000 for my
Red R1 in August just after TF&TF came out.Mine had
50,200 miles on it.They've definitly got more expensive
since TF&TF!!!!But they are worth it.!

Looks like an R-1 with either a crappy aftermarket exhaust or the twin tailpipe fell or rusted off and the single outlet is left. Did anyone notice that the car has the usual bad oil pressure sending unit problem? Engine is idling at 900 rpm, but oil pressure gauge shows almost zero pressure. Engine compartment looks like it has been unmodified- no missing parts or extra wires or holes. Everything else looks R-1: no sunroof, no rear wiper, velour seats, no cruise control, even though ad says there is, no fog lites, real R-1 front strut brace, rear spoiler. can't tell if there are two oil coolers or if it has the rock hard shocks. If engine has good compression and no coolant o-ring problems and if turbos are OK, it looks like a good deal.

"The combination of styling and performance coupled with the reliability that mazda is known for makes this vehicle an absolute joy to drive." - Reliability? Said in reference to a 3rd gen? Hah The absolute joy to drive part is true though.

It's an R1 i went to see it today, and i even test drove it. That baby can fly. It's not like my touring, but i don't know it's still beautiful. I just love red FD's.

One thing seems a little odd to me though. Isn't the front strut tower bar on the 93 R1's supposed to be adjustable? That bar looks like the ones from the 94-95 R2's. Not saying it's not an R1, it most probably is, but I wonder if it was in an accident or something that caused it to be replaced.
