Question R-Magic Lights - Where to get them?

Hey Guys,

I searched and searched both google and these boards for the answer, but I couldn't come up with the information I am looking for.

Well I finally got myself a RX-7 FD (after 6 months of grueling searches). One of my first exterior mods will be lights. I don't care for the flip ups, so I want something that sits flush on the car. Such as the C-West or RE-AM lights. However, I don't want to sacrifice light out put, and most of the reviews on these lights point to poor lighting issues. The lights that I have seen the best reviews on lighting wise are the R-Magic lights. So, I am wanting to get a set. I have found two places that sell these. Although I am a little confused as they are advertised as having Halogen lights. But in the forum threads I found talking about them, said the low beams are HID. I tried contacting the vendors but they don't respond. I wanted to verify stock and the HID part. See the links below where I found them.

R-Magic Eyes Stationary H3 Light Kit FD3S

AND

R Magic - FD Fixed Light Kit - Nengun Performance

I don't mind spending the money on them, but I would need to make sure I am getting the HID in the low beams. I am hoping that perhaps the R-Magic kit only comes with HID. But on one of the sites I linked above, it kinda states an option for HID, but you can't select options, only add to cart.

Can anyone shed some light and help me figure this out?

They are not HID. But they are still pretty bright.

Well that would make sens then considering there isn't a different option from either site when ordering. Although one of the threads I found had a pic where the boxes from the PIAA said HID. And he had installation pics of mounting the ballasts. Here is the link to that thread:

It's just an HID bulb in a foglight.
They're nothing but a safety hazard.

I also believe that Jose A. was making a replica set too, but I cannot find the link...

Search some photos of his car and you will see the lights...

Oh yeah? Ok, because that wound be fantastic. So I got a response from one of the vendors finally. It's over $1,000.00 difference between the HID and non-HID versions. Looks like the light are the same size. I am wondering if the PIAA HID lights can be purchased elsewhere cheaper and just installed into the housing. I am thinking so. But I am more fearful of what happens when there is a bulb out or a ballast failure. Hrmmm.....See the link below to the HID product from the site:

Yes,

Like I told you, it's a simple as putting an HID bulb in a fog light.
It will result in ineffective lighting that endangers the vision(and lives) of approaching drivers on the road.

AKA: You're a riced out jerk if you follow through with this.
You're essentially assembling the worst possible headlights. Worse than stock. By far.
You might as well hold mag lights out the windows.

You do bring a valid point up. There won't be a cutoff for the beam since the PIAA HID are not projector style lamps. So, then I assume it actually would be better to get the Halogen type (not to mention cheaper) since halogens perform better in reflector housings. But again, I wonder how poor the light output would be. If it's just as good as say the C-West lights, then I might as well get those since they are cheaper. I know that H3 bulbs don't give off much light as I have had a pair of projector fogs before with H3 bulbs on another car I had. Then again I don't know what wattage they were either. So, it makes me wonder then, if the Evo-R conversion would be better since they are projectors and you could put HID in those and be fine since there is a cutoff pattern with those.

You're going for a certain look, so I hesitate to recommend any other kits to you.
There are hid/projector light kits available, though using sleek lights limits things a bit due to space constraints.

Or, just lie to me and say you'll end up with halogen bulbs.

It's true, I do like the look of the R-Magic. However, I don't want to sacrifice lighting because it's nice to be able to SEE at night. But at the same time, I don't want to **** everyone off on the road either by blinding them with something that's not road friendly. I do like the Re-AM light style too, but those and C-West people complain about the lighting because it's the same kind of thing. Using small bulb types for lighting (IE Fogs)...

I got see a guy drive at night with some C-west sleeks a few years back. To say they are subpar is an understatement.

See, that sucks ***. I don't like not being able to see at night. And unfortunately for me, I ended up getting into a high speed wreck on the freeway once years ago which makes me even more sensitive to the subject. Luckily I had an HID kit in my car at the time (projectors on a R32), so I was able to see the stalled truck in the fast lane, and had enough time to at least swerve out of the way...although the back end of the truck clipped me anyway. He was completely sideways in my lane and no lights were working on the truck hence why I didn't see it. Plus that part of the freeway had no city lights over it either. So it's pitch black at night except for headlights. If I hadn't had the good lighting, I would have barreled into the side of that truck doing 70 MPH.

As the story goes, I found out that he had rear ended a semi going high speed himself, which launched his truck across the freeway and he smashed into the center divider where his truck came to rest. He was actually thrown through the windshield (no seatbelt) along with his dog. Both were laying on the freeway when I walked back once I pulled over and walked back to where the truck was. I actually was there before CHP and paramedics. It was quite eerie to witness such a thing....Wanna know the amazing part? He survived....I think he broke all but 1 of his ribs, broke his collarbone, punctured a lunch, and suffered massive head trauma.

Remind me never to get into a grudge match with a semi.

The light output isn't too horrendous on these, no worse than some of the other aftermarket options. Always thought the re-amemiya and knightsports kits had decent lighting. Regardless, it is not worth the extra money for the HID option.
