Questions on those with Pineapple Rebuilt

My Mazda reman at 42K and 6 years is throwing in the towel. I'm getting the coolant overflow, champagne bubbles, and non-returning coolant symptoms. No smoke yet, still starts easily but my vaccuum gauge is showing 11 in. Hg at idle. I pressure tested the system to 16psi and got 1.5 psi drop in 0.5 hour, 8.5 psi in ten hours. So, it's time for .... COPPER BLOCK WELD! I'm going to do this while I sort out my options.

Seriously, I've got a good spare motor from a wrecked 93 that has been sitting around for 6 years. I searched the forums and the quickest/cheapest way to get back on the road is a Malloy reman. However, here is an opportunity to get a street port, cryo freeze the block and just generally get a motor that will go 80K at 14 psi instead of 42K. I thought about KDR who is about 4 hours from here but he doesn't have cryo-freezing or the warranty. Wael-Dasher bought a new motor (from new parts) from Pineapple and W. is located in Boston so there must be something to Pineapple right?

So, those of you who have bought a motor from Pineapple, I've got questions for you:
1. who did you use to ship the block?
2. what kind of box did you put it in?
3. cost from Virginia for shipping?
4. If you could've done it again, would you go with Pineapple or locally?

I dont have thier motor but I have talked to Rob the owner. You mentioned cryo and he does that but its not the whole block. He only cryo treat the bearing and a few other things. Its basically a reliability thing. He doesnt do the apex seals or anything like that.

Just thought I'd mention that incase you didnt know.

BNRsupercars also does good motors and a fair price.

I had a TII motor that was sitting around for 5 yrs, put it in a car last fall, fired it up and it ran w/no problems. It is still running as of now. This is an original Mazda motor, not a reman, mileage is over 150K.

Running 10psi boost it'll run the 1/4 in the 13.4.

I'd say put that good spare motor in your car.
How long did your original motor last?
Have you ever checked/changed your Thermostat on the Reman?

I've seen a fairly high failure rate of stock T-stats. The problem is that it doesn't show up on the guage unless the car is majorly overheated. You could have been running around with the car mildly overheated for quite some time. This won't fix your problem now but I'd like to know how that T-stat would compare to a brand new one.

Turbo Jeff,

My original motor lasted 50K then the o-rings failed. After the first one, I installed a temp gauge to measure coolant temp as it comes out of the block to the TB. I don't think my T-stat is the problem as I had it replaced with a pump 3 years ago. Plus I set the fan to come on at 195 degrees with the PFC.

Other people have told me to just put the spare motor in the car, but I'm leary of heat hardened rubber and gaskets even though the engine had only 10K on it. While the engine is still good, why not get it refreshed with new seals and porting? Another reason for this is that we're expecting a second one to the 15 mos. old girl that we already have so time is precious. I just want a reliable motor, i.e. plug and play instead of plug and "pray."

I just got my motor back from Pineapple.
1) Ship using SAIA with Pineapple's account so you get a his discount. Round trip shiping from/to New Orleans was about $300.
2) Sent it there in an old Hayes box laying around. Returned strapped to a pallet. I've helped two others send their motors recently and we just strapped it to a pallet. Remember to put a declared value on the shipping forms.
3) Call or look at SAIA.com for a quote, probably no more than $300 for round trip.
4) Well, locally there's no alternative for me but even if KD was down the street I would have sent it to Pineapple. Either one will build you a quality motor. You can't beat the warranty 5yr/60mi, his price includes new rotor housings, and the motor has much more prep work in it than KD for less money. The motor I got for $3865 (5yr build specs,3mm Hurley seals, stage 3 street port, and oil mods) would have cost over $5000 from KD or Petit and not had a warranty. Remember KD and most other builders do not include new rotor housings in their price.

I recommend giving Rob Golden a call or e-mail. He's busy but he won't blow you off if you've got questions or concerns.
