powdercoated manifold
guys,
i have a powdercoated exaust manifold and i need to drill an EGT sensor bung. i am not familiar with powdercoat and i do not know how to do it without damaging the area.
the manifold is SSteel and came powdercoated by mistake. i wanted it bare SS.
now what can i do? is it posible to weld something upon powder? then how do i repair the welded area?
can i remove the coating and just polish the Stainles steel?
how do i remove the powdercoating?
the powdercoating is silver color. do anyone have any experience on how durable is that coating? could it be burned with the high heat with the time?
thanks
please i need your advice.

It's probably ceramic coat and not powder. Cerama-chrome most likely. Powder coat would melt/burn off almost immediately if it were to be used on any exhaust part.
To be honest, I'd be shocked if it was actually powder coat, as it would take such a remarkable combination of idiocy to accomplish without someone saying something about it being a bad idea.
I know there are chemicals that can strip powder coat, but I don't know how to strip ceramic coating. Anyone else care to chime in?

Can you contact the person you got your manifold from to find out if it's powder or ceramic?
If it's powder coat then you can buy a chemical stripper.

If it's ceramic then you're going to have to send it to someone to either strip it or re-coat it. Ceramic coat is very tough stuff and is designed to NOT come off. The only way I've seen someone remove ceramic coat was to heat the part with a torch till it's red hot and then sand blast it with aluminum oxide.

sounds like this is a single turbo manifold. It's got to be a ceramic coating..... The EGT bung - Drill the probe hole. Carefully with a dremel tool or other small grinder remove the coating around the hole to allow the bung to be welded with a 1/16" TIG appled fillet. If all is stainless I wouldn't worry about recoating.....
If it's power coating it all needs to be removed. Take it to the machine shop and have them shot blast it.....
