I picked one up about 6+ years ago for $300 one eBay Business/Industrial section....had to but the Mazda specific sofware and cable for another $300 new. It was worth it. In California we have a lot of smog regulations. At the time I was spending thousands modifying my car, then beating the hell out of the car till it begged for mercy...the tool really helped with identifying the problems without taking things apart...time is money, so is replacing things that you think are suspect. It worked with the PowerFC but it probably won't if you went to single turbo and/or simplified vacuum solenoid setup etc...which are not legal in California.

Do you think the Snap-on tool will even do the off-on solenoid testing?
Given me an example of a "data stream" test? If you can't read the data stream, does that mean you can't even do things like read the sensors, etc?
I was really hoping to find a $300 scanner that would do this - not a $1000 scanner - especially one that only works on FORDS (and RX7s) - we try not to say the F word in our house...

I researched this back in 95-96 when my first FD fell out of warranty. The biggest problem with diagnostic tools for the FD is that the FD's aren't ODBII compliant, so only 2 companies Kowa Seiki and Hickok invested in developing tools with functionality for like "on-off solenoid testing". Maybe one of these wizards hacking the PowerFC can figure it out.

I have some microcontrollers capable of implementing the interface if someone can make a trace of the MDM communicating with the diagnostic port. It would be incredibly cool to build something like a "$99 full system data logger" for the RX-7.
Anybody who has an MDM-100Z want to work on this with me?

The "dts1000" only worked on the fd and 95-96 millenia, it seems like it was abandoned for obdII
in case you're wondering, it was very expensive new ($10,000), and as such out of the 5-6 dealers in the area here none of em ever bought one

Has anyone opened up the stock ECU? If anyone has a picture of this I am very interested in seeing the internal system. If we are lucky it was created with an internal connector to a serial port (like many other OBD1 cars) that we can use to handle and manipulate the ECU code ouput. This signal will definitely be different than a PC's signal, but this could be a first step in PC/ECU interface.

I just bought a data-acquisition unit, so if I can get ahold of a system monitor, I should be able to capture the serial transfer. I'll warn you guys that this isn't very high on my list of things to do, but I'll look around for a dealership that will let me play with their tools.
Personally, I think our time and efforts would be better spent getting a Megasquirt EFI system to control the FD's stock twin-turbo system.

Well I hate to dig this up but...
What have we learned so far? in terms of logging, it doesn't look like the TechTom tool allows any type of logging what so ever. Has there been any progress since '06?

I'm making my first attempt at rebuilding my motor. Much of my wire harnesses are brittle and some spots have broken up altogether.
I figure this is an opportunity to put my software/electronics skills to good use by creating a full data acquisition system for the car, instead of focusing on the ECU. This way, not only can I see what all of the sensors are doing but how the ECU responds to the inputs (taking a black-box approach).

I've been contemplating something like that also. I'm interested in monitoring the various system values and displaying to a small LCD screen and also having the ability to either log the values to a memory card or at least display peak values.
PLX offers a pretty cool option to capture data and Innovate has their MTS (?) system. I've also seen some other generic boxes to read data from various sensors but haven't explored further.
Anyone want to collaborate on something?

The first stage involves tapping into all of the sensors/signals and using microcontrollers (I have a PIC programmer) via a serial port interface. RS-232 is much easier to implement and USB-to-serial devices are cheap, at least, until I sit and finalize the USB interface.
