Please help me decide.
This is going to be long so I apologize in advance. Here is the delima. I am in my last year of college, I thought I could wait one more year to get an FD, but I can't. I cant wait any longer. Now I need your opinions about whether I should sell my 97 Acura CL(which I paid off) and just buy an FD strait up, or should I use the money I have saved and buy one that needs a motor and some work and keep my Acura for commuting to school ( I go to the University of Maryland like only 20min from my house) The reason this is an option is because a good friend of mine owns a very well-known shop and can get me a crate motor for only $2,400.00 and won't cost me anything to put it in. But either way I can get all parts for cost, and there won't be any labor. So what would you do? I need an FD badly, so help me decide please!

Keep your acura and buy a project fd. You will get one for very cheap and instead of settling for someone elses car you can build it your your specs. Also if you intend to pass school you will need the CL for commuting since the fd will be out of commision every once in a while. I might buy a beater car because of this but thank god my bro drives me to work.

You keep your acura and build the FD. There have been so many times that I have needed to put off a project on my 7 because I needed to drive the car the next day.
Luckliy I still have a motorcycle to ride back and fourth to Kragen...

Keep your acura, build your FD slowly. Contact malloy mazda and speak to ray, a reman engine is $1950 or you can wait for certain forum member to see if he can seal that $1200 reman deal.

I can get stuff at cost too. I agree, make the FD a side project. Doing this will most deffinitely be in the best interest of the passion for your FD. You'll have it sitting and just waiting for your return, not to mention your antsy emotions for that next drive. Just think of a virgin on prom night; she's like, "**** the dance cowboy, grab my reins and race me to the end of my innocence."

I can get it for cheaper than that, but the $2,400.00 allows me to keep my motor(no core necessary) which I think will be great, because that way I can rebuild that one myself and learn everything there is to know about the motor, and then do everything on my own.

what else will really need to be replaced in the project car if I buy one with only a bad motor? Should I just do everything all at once? My friend that owns the shop says that he has done the motors and single turbos on FD's and that really seemed to help out, what else should I do?

I'm jealous! I'm in my 4th year and my only source of transportation is my FD which makes upgrades and repairs very very difficult! If you are in a position to have both, definately keep both! As far as replacing goes, make sure and do silicon vaccum hoses and might as well do a down pipe, ast, and a boost gauge. I think starting small and building in stages will help you build a reliable car and help you develop the passion and knowledge you need to keep it running well. If you jump into the seat of a highly modded RX-7 and you don't know much about them you may bury yourself.... Plus, upgrading slow is fun because you only have big gains to look forward to each time you bolt something new on. Oh yeah, might want to look into a new stereo A stock FD is pretty damn fast ne wayz.....
