pics of my ASP medium intercooler

I have had a lot of inquiries about intercoolers lately so I though I would post pics of my ASP medium before it goes in.

As you can see its top quaility. Contact Kevin Wyum to get one.

It was the original design, for some reason M2 changed it halfway through, I assume it was an error actually. As I mentioned when I took production back over I had corrected some problems. That was one of the corrections, to switch back to the non tapered end tank on the driver side. Having both tanks tapered results in there being a big gap where the duct overhangs the IC and vents ducted air to the engine bay without passing through the core. The correct core and tank assembly Damian has is the way it's supposed to be which lines the duct up correctly.

Since this was posted I'll mention that it appears I have finally found a realistic source for the new cast tube to allow air pump use and give some additional clearance for aftermarket strut tower bars. The group buy on both the ASP Large and ASP Medium IC's will be moving ahead now and will use that new part unless consumers specify wanting the straighter normal version for the turbo side. This should allow both the large and medium IC's to be used with the air pump in place. I'll also provide the option to existing owners of my kits to purchase them alone, that includes those sold as M2. It will be a little more expensive than I'd like, but it's going to be pretty small run stuff and we'll have to recoup the mold and pattern costs etc. over about 100 units. My expectation if purchased alone will be between $150 and $190. For people buying the whole IC kit there won't be any additional charge for it. It will just be the pipe that connects the turbo to the IC.

I took an ambien 25 minutes ago because I'm in desperate need of sleep so forgive me if any of this reads oddly : )

Those things are such an evolution. Even the tops of the endtanks have a story behind looking like they do. Before they used to be flat out to the edges but would scrape quite a bit on thr hood, so we changed it so a that part of the end tank top slopes down, including the top of the end tank being shifted down 1/2 row from the core to further correct the issues some had with scraping. I have to give them credit they do really nice work with stuff like the beads on the input/output tubes as well. I'm pretty proud of these kits when installed correctly. Okay Ambien is taking over I can barely type. Night night.

Here is a pic of my polished M2. I bought it used so I don't know how old it is. Notice that both ends are slanted, this causes the duct to over hang just a touch.

That's exactly what I was talking about with the end tank being wrong. Sorry they sold you the wrong one. You could very likely make a small plastic plate or something to cover that gap though and be livable.

Sorry Dwayne but I honestly don't have any such pictures side by side. Keep in mind I've been out of the business of selling these directly to consumers for over five years now. I just started doing the manufacturing again last year : ). There are lots of pictures all over the internet of the large and medium. I wish I could help with the pics but I don't even carry a stock on them anymore. I only build what Jason orders. Both are essentially the same height with similar end tanks, the large is tapered on both sides and the medium has one non tapered. The medium has a more efficient and expensive core per cubic inch (which is why they are the same price) but the additional size of the large still overcomes it providing better overall performance. The tubing for each is almost the same, just a little different bend angles and of course the ducts are shaped a little differently. The main difference is in the width, the large is about 5 inches wider than the medium. Hope this helps and sorry about not having the pictures you wanted.

I'm not trying to rag on anybody, I like the poish job and all, but isn't it common knowledge that like most of us air takes the path of least resistance ??
So why would air travel all the way to the bottom of this thing, when the air exit is at the top, and you're gradually restricting the area before the air has to move through the IC core ??
Was that the reason for the re-design in the top pic ?

I'm looking for a person that can intelligently answer this to me not someone who just bellows, this is better than anything else....

I am going to try to answer this questions an intelligently as possible. First off, let’s make sure I know what you are asking; air would always flow through the top of the intercooler only, not through the bottom?

Answer: when system is under pressure the entire intercooler is filled with air so there is no path of least resistance. This is the reason that larger intercoolers have more pressure drop because it takes more pressure to fill up the intercooler. There might be a slightly higher rate of flow through the top of the intercooler, but I don't think it would make much of a difference. I also doubt that either design would affect this.

I hope this is an acceptable answer.

I don't have time to explain it now but I just wanted to correct one minor point quickly. Larger IC's with respect to height (total cross section of internal passages) have a lower pressure drop. Pressure drop is best thought of as the difficulty air has travelling through it. The stock IC has extremely high pressure drop numbers because the air passages inside of it from the hot side to cool side allow a very small volume of air to pass. The more air you try to pass through it the harder you have to push to get it through. If an IC has 2psi pressure drop at 15psi it means that excluding cooling effects it takes 17psi on the charge side of the IC to make 15psi after the IC. You're losing 2psi trying to cram the air through. That's why my IC's have really good pressure drop numbers, they're both very tall, @ ~13 inch core height. That make sense?
