Pics: Custom Intake, Damian Heat Shield

Just finished my heatshield thanks to Damian and his templates. I didnt cut a hole in the shield for the air pump, since I dont have my stock cat anymore anyways and plan on getting rid of the air pump soon.

Ebay Intake Pipes/Couplers: $30 shipped

K&N Universal Filters (2) PN#KNN-RD-0720: $29.99 each

4'x8' piece of sheet metal, the smallest size I could buy: $8

Total was about 100 bucks. I am happy with it.

Very nice. I have the same set up too.

Are you planning on putting in the custom air duct as well?

I have the little flapper on the bottom, and a piece of foil heating duct stuff that I was thinking about using to throw cold air up in there, have you done it? Does it help? That foil stuff is pretty ghetto...I dont wanna use it unless it helps

6" long and 3" around i believe. it runs decent

Which is the EGR? if thats the long hose that goes to the stock air box, i just left it off. It makes an annoying moo'ing noise, which im going to have to deal with. Any other missing lines are from going non-seq.

okay cool so you haven't had any problem with the hose off? Yes is the long one (I'm not sure if it is the EGR but that what I have been told)

Nope, just the noise. Its not real noticable, my exhaust drowns out most noises, but at certain RPMs it really moos.

I ran a 13.07 @ 106.8 a few weeks ago without the intake. Im hoping for 12s with it, if not I'm going to have to get some sticky tires. Only performance mods I have are intake, downpipe, gutted main cat, and catback @ 8-9lbs boost. I was afraid that I would need a new ECU, but boost hasnt shown any signs of being out of control, so maybe my turbos are just getting old.

Yeah I ran that aluminum duct from the passenger side "oil cooler" duct which I don't have haha. It works really well actually. Whenever I come back after a drive, I pop up the hood and feel around the intake and it's a lot cooler than the rest of the engine. The dryer duct hose is pretty ghetto though. I'm trying to think of something else to use.

Nice job! I'm jelous now. I have a hole in my stock airbox. Somehow I think the turbos could use some more air then they're getting. Does anyone know if this mod will lower your intake temps? I am seriously cosidering this same mod. Nice work again!

Part number RD-0720. Summit has them for $29.99.
2.5" diameter where it bolts to the pipe. 6" long. I forget total diamteter of the filter, but it is around 3" maybe a little more.

racerfoo if you are truly running 8-9psi your engine is healthy. I trapped 106 with intake, dp, totally stock cat, cb and 10psi in sequential on my last car as a reference. My best time that setup was a 13.5 with a 2.2 60 time. Once I got a pettit ported motor, midpipe, pettit ecu and 12psi it was all over and I could hit 12s just playing around every run. You are doing real well with what you have. Id love to see it hit 12s with the intake on stock ecu let us know and perhaps turn the boost to 10! if it is moving from 8-9 it will hold even better at 10 and not creep at all. I dont know how much the stock ecu likes to be run on non seq though...

also, the the mooing is coming from the ACV, not the EGR which is not connected to the intake. Do a search, I've seen write-ups on how to make mufflers for that annoying sound. I plan to have the same setup also, I just need to order the filters and the pipes.

An intake mod like this may lead to increased air intake temps not lower b/c the filters are sucking in air that is in the engine bay. The stock air box and other cold air box types of intake insulate the filters somewhat so that it is drawing air from the opening - which is normally drawing air from alongside the radiator. Check the archives for a huge thread on intakes and cold air for more info.

Thats what the heat shield is for, and hose directing air from the front passenger oil cooler spot.

As for my boost, its always been low, when I bought the car it didnt have the pills in the wastegate lines, so I put in a manual boost controller and opened it all the way up. Im afraid to turn up the boost with a cheap ebay boost controller because I havnt seen good results with them on friends cars. Im waiting for an electric boost controller to be safe. The motor has about 10k miles on it, so it should be pretty healthy. Im hoping for 12s this weekend if I can pull off a decent launch.

What kind of elbow (Hard? Silicon?) could be used with the KNN-RD-0720 and the OE primary turbo intake elbow that would allow clearance for a large SMIC and OE a/c lines? I noticed K&N has a kinked version of this filter. Is that what you guys are using?
