Pettit ECU

I recently got my Rx7 and was looking to get an upgraded ECU. I've read alot about the PFC and Pettit ECU. Heres the mods i have right now. Apexi n2, PFS IC and the M2 intake. Since i wont be adding much more to it till i replace the engine....i decided the Pettit was the way to go. But....i recently have read some things about the Pettit ECU. Basically.....is the Pettit ECU still being made and does it come with any kind of warranty. I already called and talked to Jeff at Pettit...and he was telling me not to get the UNLIMITED ECU they made. If i was to get this ecu....i would buy it from Pettit new......just so i could get some kind of warranty. Any help on this would be appreciated.

You talked to Pettit already, but they didn't tell you that they didn't make it anymore? What were the exact reasons they recommended for you NOT to get it?

It's probably because they don't like to deal direct, like Thermal Dynamics. They need to look out for their bulk buyers.

Petit Unlimited you can run lots of boost. Otherwise you'we stuck at 14.7. I have a petit (non-unlimited). I had it runs really rich. You're better offwith a Power FCan have someone tune it. You'll get morepower anyways.

I just was in a really bad car accident with my FD. I78 in PA and it's totalled. I dont remember, does anyone know where the ecu is located? I'd like to pull my ECU before it's totalled.

What kind of warranty are you looking for? They will make sure it works, but that's about the only type of guarantee you'll get on ANY aftermarket part. You aren't buying toasters from K-Mart here...

The Unlimited removes the fuel cut at 14.7 PSI. Fuel cut can be a good thing so I'm not surprised they would recommend the Limited version.

Pettit is apparently working on a programmable ECU which will replace their current line of rechipped ECU's. When or if this is actual going to happen, no one knows for sure.

ECU's are just electronics, they don't just "go bad". Picking up a used Pettit ECU would not be a problem and will save you some cash to use else where on the car.

Thanks for the info. The passentger side got crushed by 2 tractor trailors, so I doubt its intake. TP

The Pettit ECU, limited or un, is great. If you eventually plan on getting a midpipe then you defiantly need to get the Unlimited.

You won't have to worry about a warranty on this ecu. If the ecu goes bad for some reason it won't be due to Pettits chipping.

I loved my Pettit ECU (Unl.)
It is set rich 10:1 a/f (4k+rpms) even with all the bolt ons, and it may have saved my engine when I ran the car hard for a day of hard road course driving with mods mentioned in my sig.

I will have the Power FC installed by weeks end I hope and will definetly be happy with owning that ECU for the year I had it. I highly recommend it.

I would get a boost controller to keep the boost down to 12 or less though.

I cant say enough about pettit. Cam is the man....I bought a used ecu from a person in the parts section, and when I got it the car wouldnt even start. I tried to ask the seller for a refund and got no response. So I thought I was stuck with a pos ecu. So I called pettit and talked to cam. He said since I do alot of bussiness with em he would send me a new chip for free "wow". after I got the chip it still wouldnt start. So I called him back and he said send the chip back and I will send you a the board the the chip plugs into ''daughter board I think". So I put it in and she fired right up. (problem fixed)
Pettit will back all their **** up. I even broke a short shifter in two. Called cam and had a new one in just a few days.

Thanks Mahjik....that basically what i was asking......is it worth buying a used UNLIMITED ECU or buy the one pettit sells now. Jeff @ Pettit seemed to think i shouldnt buy the UNLIMITED ECU. Rather just go with the new 1 they are selling.

I got the impression lately that the Pettit ECU is better (gives better hp) then M2 Stage3. I figured it can only be so due to running more lean. But now I read it runs 10:1 a/f which is pig-rich

So whats the deal with these two ?

So the unlimited is good for the basic bolt ons(DP,CatBack,Intake,IC) and the major upgrades (single turbo)???

unlmiited is just what it says.. as long as your running stock injectors you can do anything just about.. as long as you keep it under 1 bar..

The only difference, to my knowledge is that the unlimited (which is what you are getting) does not have a fuel cut function for over 14.7 psi, which means that you can run as much boost as you want, but there is no way for you to do it reliably. I think it was just more of a marketing ploy. I'll have you know a few things:
1) It can support a lot. I had full exhaust, intake, non-sequential, and a ported engine, and it was still running 10.7 afrs in the high rpm.
2)also, for some reason(maybe because it's "unlimited") , it has no rev limiter. I had one incident at the autocross, on a fun run, leaving a slalom at 7,500ish rpm in 2nd, when I went to get on the brakes and it kept accelerating (stuck throttle cable) and I hit 9,450 rpm. Another time that my gf drove the car, and missed a shift and hit 9,895 rpm! So just keep in mind that there is not a rev limit.

Fuel cut can save you in the event that your boost rises above what your fuel system can deliver. IMO, get a Limited version (which is what I'm using currently). You'll have the benefit of an aggressive Pettit map with the safety of fuel cut. Used or new, it really won't matter.

Going on 6 years of tracking, both road course and Dragging. 11.7 best to date and many HOT HOT track days at Heartland Park Topeka with my Pettit ECU. Pettit is still in business and dealing with 7's, M2 doesn't even really deal much with 7's anymore so if there's a problem good Luck. Cam WILL back his stuff up and if you are waiting for the engine to blow, the last thing you need is a programmable system that you can jack with. The Pettit will allow you to run safely without putting undue stress on the internals of an older motor. A power FC is going to allow you to make mistakes in tuning and that's just what will happen, you or someone will make a mistake and Kaboom. Stick with the Pettit limited you won't be disappointed.

I have the Pettit and have ran it at 12 lbs of boost off a boost controller for three years and had no problems. I am finally upgrading to power FC and expecting improvements. Anyone interested in a used upgraded Pettit ECU?

the pettit isnt as rich as you think, even at 12 psi. i was running 12:1. but ive got 183k on the original injectors....maybe that has something to do with it

check it out

i thougt that pettit unlimited meant you could sent it back as many times as you want for reprogramming when you added additional mods. their web page doesn't seem to indicate that unlimited means unlimited boost. i think even the unlimited ecu's are only good for 14.7 psi.

NO, unlimited just means you can run whatever boost you feel like you need, with no fuel cut, you shouldn't run them past 14.7psi because the stock fuel system cannot handle it, basically if you want more than 14psi, your looking at a reprogrammable unit...
