Every day without a downpipe is another day of baked electronics. It still gets hot, but not nearly as hot...

Since you brought up the fact that there is no FD, I must ask you how long you have had your FD3S.

Since it is only October of 2002, you could not have had your FD3S for 10 years. Perhaps 9 years and a few months at most

The midpipe helps quite a bit also with the cabin temp.

Before the midpipe, the transmission tunnel on the passenger side used to get quite hot. It was like having the heater on all the time on the passenger side. After the main cat was replaced with the midcat, there is a noticeable difference in the temp.

However, a midpipe is not as easy to live with as a downpipe. The exhaust from a catless rotary is really foul.

Hi all,
Newbee here <---------
My understanding is that by doing a after market dp the turbo boost becomes uncontrolable. I have had my "FD3S" for 3months now and I'm saving to get the APEXi FC commander before I spluge on a dp, mid pipe, and cat back N1 duel exhaust. Please help me to understand?
Thanx
Breeze

Nice tip Max. I'm sure that will come in handy in a few months when I have to errr, adjust, my precat

Perhaps I wasn’t clear on what I wanted to know. TTb thank you for your attempt to help but NO.
My current upgrades consist of autometter gauges boost and H2o temp. on A-pillar, M2 intake, AST eliminator, Mazda Competition Radiator, Brimbo slotted rotors, and Greedy Turbo Timer.
Now what I'm looking for is alittle reasiance that if I do a dp with out haveing some sort of AFC or Boost controler will I be ok?

Affecting flow, I have an intake, higher flow turbos, downpipe, and high-flow cat. No cat-back yet. I ran this way for more than 2 years with properly sized pills (holley jets) and have no trouble controlling boost.

We'll see what happens when I get the RB cat-back.

I currently have the EFI PMS out of the car as I have a bad solenoid/hose I am troubleshooting.

I feel the same way. It was my first performace mod and it felt great to hear the sound of my 13b howl.

But why? If I remember correctly, FD3S were not available until the spring of 1993.

I'm not quite clear on this- should I install a DP

I'm kidding...KIDDING !!! I'll put one on, I promise. It's on the list, really

Seriously, with all this talk of DP installation, which brands are the easiest to install? On the RX-7 store page, the M2 description mentions that it can be installed without removing the studs. Is this the easiest to install, or is it just the only one that happens to mention this feature? The M2 is probably what I'll order, unless someone convinces me otherwise.

Cheers,

I think there are 2l factors.

First, it matters how "well" the downpipe is made. When I put my downpipe on several years ago, I had no trouble whatsoever with the dowpipe from Tripoint. Soon afterwards, I read of all these horror stories involving installation of other downpipes - possibly due to clearance issues with the downpipe itself.

The other factor is how easily the studs come out. When I installed the dwonpipe the nuts on the stud came off after soaking them on WD40 overnight. However, if the nuts are rusted on the stud, you may end up removing the stud which may be very difficult to do.

I was able to install my Pettit DP without removing any studs. It fits great. Good quality.

1. It eliminates a failure-prone part on your car. Often when they fail and disintigrate it also destroys your main cat.

2. Improves flow through the exhaust. Your turbos will last longer and will be more efficient, thus improving performance.

3. Removes a heat source from near the engine bay area that helps bake your underhood electronics (as well as your feet).

No one will notice the DP in an FD. Get it, it will make a big difference in underhood temps.

Thanks for the comments on installation ease. It sounds like the M2 and Pettit are both "safe" currently. It'll probably come down to whichever Jason has in stock when I order.
