Oil in intercooler

My buddies 3rd gen has a little problem. He had started it a couple of days ago and let it run for a while. While it was running he noticed that there was a lot of blue smoke all of a sudden so he went and shut the car off. When he did that he heard a gulping sound coming from under the hood. He opened the hood and disconnected the Y pipe and noticed it was full of oil. He then proceeded to take a look at the intercooler and realized it was full of oil. Now my question is what would of caused this to happen. Was it the turbos? If it was the turbos, what would make the seals give out all of the sudden. He hasn't driven the car because it is winter so all of this happened in his garage with the car on jack stands.

Turbos will have some oil blow by. It is fairly normal for that to happen.
I mean how much oil are we talking?

As Haggard stated this is quite normal for a fd but how much oil are we talking. Also it's not definetly the turbos.
I saw a car on Monday that had this issue and the turbo were replaced and the problem was still there. A block cat can also cause this as there will be too much backpressure.

I'm talking a lot of oil, like a couple of liters. He is in the process of pulling his turbos out for a look. He has no cats left in his exhaust and the engine is rebuilt with 10000mi on it.
