Oil Filter

What oil filter are all you running? Shortly I will be replacing mine and was curious what out there is good/popular or bad. Also any tips/tricks on removal? easier from above or below? Should be be pretty straight forward or several parts to remove first. Thanks for the advice guys, as always.

no need to remove anything to get to the oil filter. fyi i like to punch a hole in the top of the filter with a pointed punch and then let the oil drain out of the plug, then you can remove the filter without all of the mess. oh an i use pureoilator.

Purolator PUREONE.
No tips really, it's pretty straight forward. I do use a cast oil filter socket with a 3/8 inch ratchet, 12 inch extension and a universal joint for removal.
And I've never punched a hole in the filter. I'll wrap a rag under the filter pedestal, but very little comes out if given a little time.

Well, since you're going to (or should) replace the oil every 3000 km, i don't think the brand of oil filter is important, as it doesn't stay on there long enough to make too much of a difference right? I'm thinking of getting one of those filter magnet (filter dot) things, I'm just reading up on them to see if they actually work, or just a waste of money.

I use oem. I also like to let the car sit overnight before changing the filter. That way the oil has all drained out, and there is no mess when removing it.

This is an old topic.

I use OEM. The OEM filter has a valve that helps maintain oil pressure.

I tried that once but the oil filter DID NOT want to come off. Im sure it would have came off if i removed the elbow/tb maybe for better leverage but i normally do it by snaking my hand in there.

So i just run the engine for about 5 minutes, then the oil filter is easy to take off.

I change my oil religiously every 3 months regardless of miles and recently my oil has always came out like its brand new lol.

Ha, gotta love shoving your arm/arms back in there trying to break it loose and all you can think of is why the hell did I give it that last little turn when I installed this thing!!

Apparently not old enough.

Assuming your referring to the anti-drain back valve...others have it too. And in my case, I don't have to drive 30 minutes to the nearest MAZDA dealership.

No apparently not old enough...

It was the anti drain back valve. I get a few from Ray and keep them in the garage so no driving involved. Just ordered a 4 packer from the good man last week as a matter of fact.

I have WIX right now and have used K&N oil filters on mine. Not sure if one is better over the other or not.

NOT ALL, but Certain brands of oil filters are all manufactured on the same assembly line by a big conglomerate manufacturer. The guts (the part you care about that filters the oil) are all the same, but they slap on a different outside skin with the brand's name on it and then one brand will advertise that theirs is better than the competition.

Hypothetically: An Autozone brand oil filter may be the exact same thing inside as a Fram oil filter, yet the Autozone will be less expensive in contrast to the Fram.
