oil cooler ducting suggestions
hi all, my oil temps a bit high on my fd.. the oil coolers stock and still in quiet good condition.. so I think its because my new body kit is restricting some air to the oil cooler.. I want to customize my own cooling duct.. from carbon fiber any suggestions on how big and how much I need to cover the oil cooler?? I mean ducting the whole oil cooler or only the middle parts?? anyway would the ducting help??

well the problem is the oil cooler kits that are "the good stuff", cost over $1000. r1/r2 oil coolers will run you much much less

First, what temps are you seeing? You need to have a benchmark to know if your upgrade helped or hurt.
Second, ducting the oil cooler is a huge benefit. Just like the radiator, air will take the path of least resistance. If there isn't something forcing the air to go through the oil cooler, most of it will go around it.
Lastly, there are positive and negatives to some kits. If you are just using your car for street driving, simply going with the OEM Mazda dual cooler setup will be the easiest to implement.

The stock dual coolers are good enough for the street and some track duty. You probably won't need anything larger unless you track the car in some serious heat.
Check Howard Coleman's thread: "Dual Oil Coolers Cheap". He details all the parts you need to add on another factory oil cooler. Cheap and effective.

I would personally start by looking into fabricating some kind of ducting from sheet aluminium like this car. It is important to start with some kinda poster board paper material for the mock-up and then cut the aluminium.

I have done the dual oil cooler converson myselft and I'm no technician, I have a complete list of parts used if your interested. I plan on doing the duct work like the above car once I'm done with the 4" exhaust system.

If using used OEM dual oil coolers, I would recommend sending out for cleaning, fin repair and thermal coating. There is a helicopter cooler repair place in Forth Worth Tx. that does a fantastic job at a very reasonable price and with a quick turn around. My coolers came back looking brand new. I forget the company name and I have misplaced my FD maintainance/upgrade receipts file (going back to original purchase in ’95) in a house move but a search on this site with my name and oil cooler should pull it up.
As to ducting on a stock front end, I would recommend the OEM ducting, I added weatherstriping foam around part mate with cooler and added SS screen (painted black) in ducting .. pull front end and fit screen forming “cups” to wrap over lip of opening then used small SS bolts (painted black) to hold in place.

Guys, the poster is in Thailand so I don't think shipping oil coolers to Texas would be a good idea. Unless the oil coolers are used and have 100k miles on them, they will most likely be fine "as is".
