Tom, I think you missed the point which is that Barry is "keeping his wife" this way. Keeping your spouse is definitely worth more than any single car.

besides, even though I'm spending a lot of money on my house, it makes me feel a lot better that my wfie is happy also that we're buying things together.

lol, I remember her face when she seen the bill for a new engine and other stuff from KDR - I knew it would have to stop one day...

FD itself isn't such a problem. Modifying it IS. You want shitload of power and then things start to go wrong and the spending begins...

Stage3 modification is more then enough for the street IMO. And it can be even more reliable then stock (dp, IC, ...)

Keeping wife was a good choice, but me on the other hand, I wouldn't want to live with someone who would make me pick between her and the little joys of life that I enjoy in. Life is too short

But generally if you're spending tens of thousands of $$$ on a car, you're spending too much. It doesn't have to be an FD...

 

But if you owned *two* FDs.......

my wife knows my car is my hobby. she doesnt get angry when i pruchase things for it. Although i havent spent 6k on a motor or 4-5k on a turbo upgrade.

 

Wife.. or FD.... wife... or FD.... FD breaks down all the time... wife breaks down all the time... FD has smoke coming from the exhaust... wife has smoke coming from her ears.... FD is bright red.. wife turns bright red very easily.... FD costs alot of money..... wife costs 3x that per week.... FD is stuck with you unless it tries to kill itself.... wife can leave and take 1/2 of everything including the FD..... I think the FD is a better deal.

 

I remember a few years ago after buying my FD when I first took it to KDR, Dave said, just be prepared to spend two to four thousand bucks a year on mods, once you start you can't stop. I thought "No way, it is fast enough". Well a paint job, front mount IC, Power FC, drilled slotted rotors, racing harnesses, etc, etc, etc. He was right. What I do is spend a grand or two every six months on a low interest credit card, pay it off and schedule for more. Going in to KDR Mon for stuff and in the spring its rims (my factory chrome is so pitted that I am now really embarassed).
Everyone here who sold their car for a house remember this, you can live in your car, but you can't drive your house.

Been buying all of the stuff you're doing and still have the FD. Key is to leave the FD alone and enjoy as it is Hard, like resisting junk food but can be done. Just take it out for joy rides and to work once and awhile. Feels like a bullet compared to my beater so no need to go faster

Wife lets me keep the FD even with my new boy. With the extra $$ I would have put in it I bought investment property instead (better return on your $$ and will let you have fun with the FD in the future once it appreciates)...

 

Not only that a home is an ACTUAL investment. What you put into it, you get back + some when you sell.

You made the smart mature choice.

 

I'm the type of person that if I work hard to achieve or get something, you have to kill me to get me to give it up. So the idea of investing in my house and getting money back when I sell it is pointless, I won't care when I'm dead. I'd rather put all the money I can into something that will keep me sane throughout my years. And nothing is more relaxing then going for a nice drive for no reason at all, in no direction in particular.

 

i know exactly what you mean man. thats the time i do most of my best thinking. its just me, the car, and some cruising tunes and its so relaxing for me. great way to block out what happened during the day or to reflect on it.

 

You don't have to wait until you sell to get your money. You can get a home equity loan (or line of credit which is better) which is tax deductible to buy your next car. Could have bought an FD new in '93 but bought a townhouse instead and kept my FC. Had fun with the FC for a few more years and then got the FD when it would not impact my budget. With the way real estate has gone up in recent years, worked great for me. Once you get a house, watch your taxes drop way down. Took the profit from the townhouse, paid off the FD, and bought a nice single house with a large double garage and yard. And it's gone up enough that I could take the equity and buy a couple more FD's.

Trust me, if I was young like most of you, I would invest heavily right from the start. Then I'd have a Viper or 2 by now

 

Well I have a long time before an FD won't impact my budget.. but I should have it paid off by the time I leave college.

 

i wouldnt classify a primary home as an actual investment. Remeber sell high buy high. Its more of a hedge then an investment.

 

You can make that argument but what's the average return on real estate over X years? Better than most low-risk investments. You're investing in yourself (like college) and acquiring an asset which appreciates over time. It's sure more of an investment than renting...and like an investment, the interest cost is tax deductible.
