Hi guys and girls.

Well my names James and i live in New Zealand and have been looking at an rx7 for a while now. Well i finally found one. 96 S7 Type RS. Rebuilt with stock parts. Anywho, onto the test drive. All was pretty good except for what i can only describe as a "mechanical groaning" coming from beneath the gear stick. I could only hear it in low RPM. I dont want to be negative about it as it may be a rotary noise, i wouldnt know. So if anyones got any comments about the situation, dont be afraid to share.

Cheers
James
My car had a similar noise when i test drove my car. I took a chance and bought the car as everything else was very clean, ive still got the noise. I wondered about this alot and did a search and found similar questions. My mechanic told me its from having a lighter gear stick **** or a short shifter. I have a CF mazdaspeed gear **** and i can sometimes hear this noise while im driving. I dont usually worry about it. But ive been told the original gear **** will probably stop the noise.

I can hear the engine revving through the gearbox. But once i hold the gear **** the sound goes away. Does the car have an original gear ****?

It could also be an aftermarket exhaust rubbing on the tranny as my exhaust does shake a bit..

JSmall: Yea im thinking about it. Why, Is there a reason not too?

BigWillieStyles: Thanks for that. It was a stock gearstick etc. but was a mazdaspeed exhaust. But glad to hear a positive side out of it. Might still get a mechanical check to be safe... or might get BADSVN2000's FD. Something to think about...

GTFO! I live in Japan and have never seen a clean S6 FD under $10,000, if you buy a car for less than 10K, its ratshit!

S7s and S8s dont seem to come down in price. In many cases ive seen S8s sell for more money than they were sold new here. I would say $25,000 for a nice late model S8.

RZs, and Spirit Rs regulary go for $40,000.

New Zealand is lucky with its import laws, Australia on the other hand is actually quite strict and any cars that come into the country must go through strict, expensive compliance. New Zealand also has new laws that have just come into effect, meaning that no cars before the year 2000 can be imported.

This might be completely irrelevant but dog tooth gears will whine but youd hear it all the way through the rev range...

Wow, lot of low post counts in here. yes, short shifters have been linked to transmission whine. Change the fluids and it should go away somewhat, power delivery will feel better too.

Since i haven't bothered to look at the car and am unfamiliar with exactly what kind of sound it is i can't guarantee that it is just trans-whine.

I think atkins rotary describes the noise by their short shift kit description.

EDIT: it's not atkins

OMG champion, all the descriptions they are using are exactly what ive been experiencing. Thats a great help, i was starting to worry that it was something worse.

One question, if i was to change my short shifter to another brand. Would the other short shifter make the same noise?

Short shifters have little to do with transmission whine. I'd say nothing but it's early.

It's possible the input shaft bearing has advanced wear, that's the most common source of transmission noise. I would take the car to a transmission shop for a checkup before buying.

It might just be something simple like a leaky air pump hose.

They don't whine because of the dogs, but because they're straight-cut, not bevel gears.
