Yo K,

You can bet I'll be running home from work tonight to see those results! I'm pumped about this. Hell, if it only makes 30 RWHP I'd be ecstatic over it.

Here is the plan. I've got 4 - 6 runs to play with tonight.

Runs 1, 2, 3 will be baseline runs to verify I can turn consistant numbers as the car warms up. I'll be running .8bar boost. I put down 306rwhp @ .8bar so somewhere in the 300rwhp range will be my baseline. I expect intake temps to creep up to 55 - 60C.

Before run 4 I will chill the Intercooler with N2O until the intake temps drop to 20C. And will make another run @ .8bar, watching to see how quickly or slowly the intake temps climb back up (this will help me determine if I need to by spraying down the intercooler with N2O DURING a run), but more importantly to watch my rwhp, rwtq and a/f ratio's. According to the 1 - 1.5% per 10 degree's, I'll expect to put down 12 - 24rwhp additional with that 40 degree drop in intake temps.

assuming everything looks good

Before run 5 I'll chill the intercooler and see if I can get intake temps down below 0C, maybe as low as -10C. I would expect another 10 - 20rwhp from this additional 30 degree drop in intake temps.

assuming everything goes well,

Run 6 will be another -10C run, but with boost set at .9bar. I've previously dyno's 320rwhp @ .9bar on a hot day and I'll shoot for 350rwhp.

If anyone see's any problems with my logic, speak now, otherwise, wish me luck!

Yo K,

So what's the deal, man? How'd it come out? Were all itching to hear!

Welp, here is the scoop, won't know if my engine is hurt until this afternoon when I check the compression, but it is showing some bad symptoms.

1) First I need to say spraying nitrous directly from a bottle onto your intercooler is dangerous! And it makes you light headed if you inhale it...

2) The intake temp sensor on the car never moved during the experiment, DO NOT RELY on it for an accurate temperature while "spraying" if you try this at home.

Summary in short this weekend:

There are definate gains to be had, but experimentation with this seems to be dangerous as well. I'm guessing we were able to cool my intake temps by over 100degrees.
The PFC did not respond to the temp drop due to the slow to respond stock intake temp sensor. Without the PFC adding fuel for you based on the "actual, superchilled" intake temp (and denser air) you easily move toward a lean condition and detonate. Bye-bye engine.

My engine pulled ok on the street afterward, but idle is bad, my guess is I've thrown side seal.

After a rebuild, breakin, and some additional sensors I'll be back at it again. I ask that everone not PM me asking for the actual HP gains as we did not get a complete "on spray" dyno run in due to the no-so-nice sound(s) of my engine detonating.

I will however leave you with this - a 20% gain in horsepower is possible by significantly dropping the intake temps, just make *double* sure you are delivering enough fuel!!!

Anyone try mounting electric fans on the intercooler? I have been looking for a small 4.5 inch electric fan to do this. The smallest I have found in 5.75 inches.

Would it be possible to create a closed system that circulates the NO2 through some coils that never actually release the NO2 while superchilling them. Then these coils could be built into, or placed on top of the intercooler, drastically reducing intake temps constantly. Possible?

Well, the used NO2 would have to get repressurized in order to be re-used. As the cold NO2 runs past the IC, it would heat up and vaporize in the tubing. To recondense it, you would have to recondense it by pressurizing and chilling it somewhere. Basically, it would be just like a refrigeration circuit.

wrapping (basically) an A/C unit around your IC would be an easier feat, oh, and people already make those units! Search the forums, I heard it mentioned the other day. A link was provided to pictures and several vendors.

why dont you just get a Co2 tank frm a paintball gun and rig one up yourself. how hard can it be to put some holes in a bent pipe and mount it to the front of your intercooler

Call me crazy, but has anyone ever considered custom making an IC with dual chambered end tanks and fill the secondary tanks up with dry ice?
