New water pump - use RTV on gasket?
Guys,
Will be fitting a new water pump, gasket and thermostat this afternoon. I got some RTV just in case i need it - should i use it on the gasket? and if so, should i use it on one side of the gasket, or both?
Also, the bolt that holds the far right side of the water pump on and the alternator bracket seems to be seizing up, its very hard to remove and refit - does anyone know why this is? its almost like the bolt hole is filled with carbon or something! its too deep to re-tap though what can i do to clean it out?

RTV or Ultra Black silicone on both sides of the gasket are failproof it wont leak if you install it correctly.. The hard part is cleaning it all off when its time to remove again. The bolt issue sound like locktite residue corrupting the threads nothing much to do besides rethreading it and not crossthreading that bolt it will be all kinds of wrong if you were to cross it.

ok, im just worried because i dont want to have the gasket leak through not sealing properly, so i want to use RTV, but i dont want to use RTV because if i do it up too tight it will just squeeze out all the RTV! But i dont want to do it up looser than usual because then itll leak! lol
What does that bolt on the side do? is there nothing i can spray in there to clean it out?

When i bought a new waterpump from the dealer it didnt come with a gasket and i did not feel like waiting 5 days more to order it. I ended up RTV'ing it and it hasnt leaked since, and btw i used the orange high temp rtv. Even if you do torque the bolts down tight the rtv will squeeze out, as that is its nature. But at the same time it fills in the voids and creates a tight seal.

When you apply RTV on these types of gaskets it should be as thin as you can make it, then it will not sqeeze out enough to cause problems. I've seen radiators with RTV "sqeezeout" plugging the tubes. Making it really thin will also make it easy to clean off next time. It seals just as well.
You can try aluminum "cutting oil" on the bolt hole that is corroded. It will loosen most dirt etc. The stuff I'm refering to is green. Do make sure you don't cross thread it though.

ok, well ive fitted the water pump now just with a standard gasket - i also sprayed some WD40 into that nasty hole and it loosened right off the next day, now its just like a regular bolt hole!
hopefully my water pump wont leak now...
