New Engine / Blue Smoke
Less than 100 miles ago I had a new engine installed (reman from Mazda, but not installed by Mazda). Each morning I get blue smoke for about 3 minutes and the idle is not as smooth as it used to be. Air/Fuel mixture or oil in the combustion chamber? How can I tell? I also had a downpipe installed at the same time. Thanks for your help. (I'm new to the Forum, but I've owned my car for a couple of years).

ouch.... that doesn't sound like a good engine. Does it come with a warantee? When I had my engine rebuilt, it only did that for the first few minutes after install, and never again. My street-port made the idle hunt whenever it was cold, but after warmup, it's gone.
According to the forum, 7 out of 10 mazda remans are crap. Also according to the forum, the exhaust will smell like "maple syrupy sweet" if it's coolant. When my engine was blown, all I remember was getting light-headed.
Good luck

It's normal for a new engine to smoke. It's just burning off excess assembly lube, etc. It will idle a little weird too. The smoke and rought idle will go away after you wear in the engine a little.

However, my cars have always blown a bit of blue smoke on start up from the turbos. Just a bit of oil will slip past the oil seals into the exhaust turbine housings if is sits for more than a couple of days. Every FD I have owned has done this (I've owned 6).
I wouldn't get concerned just yet. Three minutes is a bit too long, but give it another 1-200 miles of break in and go from there.

I've gone 1300 miles on my pineapple racing stage 3 and it still puts out a lot of blue smoke every time I start it. I found some oil in the intake tract I guess is coming from the turbo's. I'm assuming thats the cause of the smoke.

Thanks, I'll check the turbos. I've just bought a mid-pipe and am going to replace, what I believe to be, the original catalytic converter. If the cat's clogged, would that cause blue smoke or just a nasty smell?

I talked to Rob at Pineapple about this and he told me it could be a couple things. 1: if the oil seals are cryo treated they will take alot longer than normal to set and may let a little oil by for a few thousand miles. 2: The turbos could be leaking oil... which mine are. Hope this helps.

Quick update. Still smokeing... seems to be getting better. Rob at Pineapple assured me if the oil control rings don't seat he will rebuild it again. Apparently there were some quality control issues with the cryo-treatment in the past, though its all resolved now. Again I gotta give Pineapple an A+ for customer service.
