I don't think they are that rare. 2 of the 3 models the Spirit R came from had them and there were 1500 total Spirit Rs built. I also heard the 2001 RZs also had red seats but I think those didn't have a shiny back. Mine are black RZ seats and aren't shiny in the back at all. Maybe I'll wax em!
I stand corrected....yes 1500 Spirit R's were produced from what I can gather but there were three types of Spirit R ("Type A", "Type B", and "Type C") I'm not sure if all three had the red Recaro seats. It would be a PITA to have the type "B" which was the 2+2 with fixed back racing seats! Anyone have the real info I'd love to be enlightened.

Crispy

Super jealous! Wish I could pull off those seats in a yellow car but don't think I could handle the ketchup and mustard theme lol

Great job on the restoration and glad you found some decent seats

The Recaro SPGs would of been SOOO much better for the track though

No sir, I stand corrected. The type A was the only package that received the red seats. If I was a betting man, I'd venture to say the majority sold were type A. I don't think the numbers of how many were ever released. I'm curious as to find out as well.
A - 2 seater 5 spd
B - 2 + 2 5 spd
C - 2 + 2 Auto

Later model RZs did have the red recaros.

Maybe this is where 175 made came from.
"Only 175 units of this limited edition model were sold."

I'm surprised to see that the RZs shared alot of interior parts with the Spirit R.

The Steering wheel, shifter + boot and ebrake handle + boot look the same. Even the foot rest. From a quick glance, the only things I see that are different, gauce cluster and gray interior plastics.

Wow I didn't notice before but I think I spot cushion pads for your knees.

Very nice, I'm extremely jealous of you. Might I please ask how you came about the original seats?

Looks amazing man, and probably cost a lot less than it would to order the covers and cushions from Mazda too.

Yup, Andy I agree with you..... I have a really killer FD mag I need to show ya next time we hang out. Hard to decipher, but tons of good pics. Looks like 300 RZ were produced, unsure how many came w/the red recaros.

Also, I can confirm that only the Type A had them, as the B and C had the red leather seats.

Edit to add pic.... it's been posted before, but this is an appropriate place

$200 for 5 sq metres of Recaro fabric (3 maybe but for sure 4 would have been enough though)
$20 for high density seat foam
$9 for a large spool of UV and mildew resistant HD poly upholstery thread
$80 (YIKES) for a new pair of OEM seat belt guides
$5 emblem embroidery
$12 1 can heavy duty upholstery spray adhesive

I'm all in for $326 (not including the cost of the seats themselves of course)

FWIW,
Crispy

PS I have enough genuine OEM red Recaro fabric left over for one seat recover. Or anyone want to repair a worn out panel or fix a hole in a cushion... Anyone interested in some fabric let me know.

Dude...you should consider offering that as a service..i'm sure some folks on here have seats that are fading/wearing out with age.

Would love to see pics of your seats installed. cheers.

Very nice job restoring the seats. They look fantastic. I see a future project for my black Recaro RZ driver's seat...

Well it's all in the labor....lots and lots of labor. I'd guess probably close to 60 hours to do the pair start to finish. Although I daresay a lot of that was on the learning curve.

But now that I have the covers unpicked it should be considerably less. I guess it would depend on what folks would want.

Rich,
A killer pic of your car. I love the lens. And yes I'd very much like to take a look at what you have. When I visited Japan a few years ago and toured the Mazda factory in Hiroshima (and visitied RE-A ) I grabbed a few rotary mags I can bring to show also.
A few from my "stash"

I definitely agree on the SPG's but I didn't build a racecar I built a fast streetcar...that I take to the track once in a while
But don't think I haven't forgotten. Perhaps when you have something else up for grabs that I'd like I can cash in my chit

FYI, the factory Recaros were also in black starting in the '96 RZ models. The red ones came later, of course, but there were quite a few with the black Recaro seats. As far as I can tell, the black seats seem to be the same design.

Good job, Crispy, that turned out incredible! I'm sure that was a TRUCKLOAD of labor, though!

ahhhh....nope. IIRC you may be able to buy them through Mazda at roughly $4200 each.
