My First Car ?????? Help!!!!

Well im 16 years old and i am most certainly gettin my car soon. i love the rx7 and i found the perfect 94 RX7 in my place, with only 24k MILES!!! and its like brand new.. but i cant get the fact that i can get a new car as well.. but i can only choose one.. see, if i get the rx7 i want for 15k dollars i have the option to do alot of things to the stock rx7 to make it look really nice!! but on the other hand i still cant get out of my mind that i can get the 2006 Infiniti Coupe, but then again if i get tht i can only do so much with the car..

as some of you may have read my story, i am stuck... what do you think i should do because im in the positon that i dont want to make the wrong decision!!!I LOVE BOTH CARS!!!

Get the Infiniti. The RX-7 is too much hassle for a new driver.

Have you learned anything about FDs yet? Are you aware how unsuited this car is for daily driving and beginning drivers? Did you get an insurance quote yet or priced out your annual maintenance? Every year these cars get older and more dried out and brittle and if it's your daily driver that can put you in some real cruddy situations.

While it's possible to mod an FD pretty well, it can spend a lot of time in the shop. I think the Infinity will be a much more enjoyable car - maybe the car part of your life won't be quite as punchy, but the rest of your life will be much better for it.

I suggest you read the FAQ that's stickied in this forum, and then run a search for the words teenager and daily together. Nearly everyone here has made their opinion known.

Dave

i know how u must feel but don t get the FD if u are a new driver. Get more experience driving. With all the power u have you re going to want to use it. get the infiniti or if u can get an older car to learn from. last thing u want is having the extra money then using it to fix ur car after u drove off the road.

Buy the G35 coupe. The FD is not a car for someone our age to drive, sorry. It's gonna cause you too many problems even if it is "like brand new almost". It's a fact. Even reading the FAQ isn't going to give you the full idea of how often this car will cause you grief. G35 is a much better choice for you if you're a new driver. It's got plenty of power and great reliability and responds very well to modification if you plan on that in the future. Not to mention it's brand new and very comfortable. I would actually recommend you NOT buying a RWD car with as much power as these two have, but it's your choice. Give it some thought.

It has nothing to do with driving stick. Low miles doesn't mean much either, I'm afraid. It helps, but it doesn't mean very much now that it's 14 years old.

It has a lot to do with driving a RWD car that is very low, has poor lines of sight, is often not noticed by other traffic (people inevitably WILL drive into you), can comfortably reach speeds that will kill (as in misjuding a corner or coming up on something unexpected in the road), has poor reliability, no cargo space, and has poor fuel economy. Most owners don't use these cars as daily drivers. Just wait 5 years and pick one up then.

If you really want to enjoy a car, buy a basic RWD car that leaves a few grand per year in spare cash. 2nd gen RX-7s are one of many good choices. Put good tires on it and attend a few driving schools and high performance driving events on the track. You'll quickly mature past the fascination of the shell of a car and get really addicted to the real aspect of motorsports - driving.

see i like the whole idea of fixing it up with a nice set of rims, new lights that you can see without popping up and an exaust and just modding up the engine, but see i can do tht with the g35 but its just not the same, and i take car of my property tphan... i treat my property with respect.. ex: my shoes get cleaned everyday just so they can look white, and ther just skater shoes.. but anyways,

do you guys think getting an exaust and some rims may sound and teh look of the car any worse! cuz the car is a beauty!!!

The more I hear, the more it sounds like you'd enjoy a G35 more.

The FD is not the car to simply slap on some appearance toys and drive around. If I had only one car, I'd absolutely buy the G35. It's much more comfortable and modern.

Either way your insurance will probably be like 5 grand anually lol, but I would get the G35 with traction control, stability control, and brake force distribution. With the FD youll spend a lot of time in the garage, and maybe boost too hard around a turn and lose the car... Also I'd think in LA theyd be a hot target for theft or vandalism from someone jealous at your high school. Besides when your in HS you need to carry more than 1 person hah. Good Luck either way.

but im not only going to be doing that... i would be getting mods for the engine which would increase the speed and other things for the car.. as i do enjoy the g35 as much as i do with the rx7, like u said and had the experiance and heard from other people that own an FD, i dont want those kind of things happening to me.. its my first car and i want it right...

and btw im not only going to be putting up some kits and rims if thats what you think, im going to do alot more.

With a G35 you won't need to drop $8k when you engine goes boom. Because it won't. Oil changes, gasoline, and tires.

And since you haven't mentioned anything that suggests you will be doing the work on this car yourself, round up on the dollar values. It's not hard to put $15k into an FD in a year or two.

Did you get an insurance quote yet for the FD?

SO then why did you say you want a G35 or an FD that's half the price?! Why not go with a reliable car for the same price as the RX7?! Like an Audi S4 or WRX or something along those lines that will be safer and more reliable?! DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT get an FD for your first car. You will regret it! Sure the first day you show up to school it'll be a nice car, but then sa couple months down the road when you blow seriously damage the motor you'll be made fun of cuz you won't have a car for a while... When you could buy the Infiniti and have a reliable car with free oil changes for life and good warranties!! It's no contest, the G35 IS the best car for you at 16.

And I second everything Dave said in every one of his posts! Every bit of what he said is absolutely the TRUTH

I agree with those that say wait for the FD. It is one fast auto stock. I gave my son a 260Z (1976) that had a 280 block installed. He didn't think it was worthy but the day he got his drivers license and took it out he missed a turn and crushed the passenger side into a fence. If you get it respect it, be careful, and have a cash reserve. FYI I am 57 and the car's performance is greater than I can handle. Bought a touring in 93.

Buy anything other than a FD.... takes commitment to own.

At 16 your time should be spent on other things other than working on a car that eats $$$.

I agree, I would pick another car for now. I own my FD for about 1.5 years now...it's in relatively good condition overall but just the upkeep of it is already passed $6,000. Most of the $$$ went to replacement/maintenence parts that have been worn out of the past 13+ years. I'm sure other folks have easily spent more than me in same amount of time. Heck, I barely even started buying anything for myself to enjoy on the car (i.e. wheels, IC, 99 bumper, etc)...but that's okay...I want to fix the most "uh-ohs" as I can, first. I admit, I have shops do most of the bigger work which would generate the labor bills...but even then...the time that's it's been out and down...I was fortunate to have a daily driver. Not many students are fortunate to have 2 cars in high school or college...having friends pick you up/buses is the way. And I graduated from college 2 years ago and working only with full time career job...I don't know HOW I could've went through high school or college with an FD alone and pay for the things I've already had done.

Regardless, you will have a lot of lovin', commitment and definitely "baller-status" $$$ if you plan to keep an FD and make it last for awhile...even if planning to keep stock or all show/go. The G35's is a great car and probably the nicests car currently in production.

My .02 cents.

There should be a sticky for this tipes of threads that just say

FDs ARE NOT THE CARS FOR BIGGINERS.
IS NOT A GOOD DAILY DRIVER.
IF YOU JUST GOT YOUR PERMIT GET YOU A CRAPY CAR THAT YOU CAN TRASH
GET YOU SOMETHIG RELIABLE!!!!
INSURANCE WILL RAPE YOU ALONG WITH GAS.

Seriously if you get the FD will spend most of it time sitting in a garage or a ditch.
