Let me get this straight, break up, then the car just died on you?>

On my last 13B, single turbo engine, I was coming back on the highway and a STI passed me, I hit it to catch him, raced fast and hard for a few miles, he got off the exit, 2 minutes later, my car died at 100mph. It "turned over" but I detonated it, so bad there was bearing in the oil. I hadnt noticed until after the race, my fans had shorted and temp had gone 2 high, but I experience the exact same "break up" when I hit the gas and then the exact same detonation and death. Rebuild time pal. I hope I am wrong though.

Perhaps place your finger "over" the hole not "in it" would have been a better choice of words. You can always just listen for even pulses.
