Muffler/Cat Back Buying Advice

My 94 Base RX7 is 100% stock with 68k miles and I would greatly appreciate some advice on a non- stock muffler replacement. I searched many posts on this forum and was overwelmed with the info regarding exhausts.

I'm looking for one of those single 3 or 4" pipe mufflers that's stainless, and has a quiet throaty sound. All else including the Cat is working good.

I shall greatly appreciate any advice!

This forum ROCKS!!

Sorry for the duplicate post..........I messed up somewhere.

exhaust

Since your car is 100% stock and has close to 70,000 miles on it I recommend removal of the precat and replacing it with a stainless downpipe from M2 or Pettit. One that just bolts up without removing the studs. For the cat back there are a bunch of options. I like the racing beat exhaust because it is not unpleasantly loud and has a nice tone to it.

The RX-7 store at the top of this page carries both.

I'll agree, I have the racing beat, and am quite pleased with it... not very loud at all until you get into the upper RPM range (even then it's not bad).

I've heard good things about the new M2 exhausts, but I've also heard they're on a huge backorder (worth looking into tho).

I'll also agree on replacing the pre-cat with a downpipe, although I was under the impression that the Pettit DP doesn't work with the stock studs (correct me if I'm wrong). The M2 does for sure.

downpipe

Do you get boost spikes after you install a downpipe?
Then you would have to get a boost controller?

boost spike

I have not experienced a boost spike from a downpipe running through a stock cat and with the stock restricted intake I would not expect a problem. A boost gauge would be a goog idea though because they all tend to be a little different from car to car.

Smile Thanks for the advice guys.

Jerry, there's one more thing I'm concerned with. Do you know if your suggested setup, will pass the emmisions inspection in a strict state like NJ? Again thanks for responding.

Bonez makes an upgraded exhaust replacement system that is EPA legal (Downpipe and Hi-Flo cat):

I'm running this replacement using a GReddy Power Extreme Cat-back and enjoy it a lot. The Bonez system has passed emmisions on cars in CA so I'm sure it would pass in your area.

I've heard of people passing emissions with a downpipe and the stock cats in California. Granted, it shouldn't pass the visual inspection, but not too many emissions inspectors poke their heads under your car *and* actually know what they are looking at.

Graziano, I'm in NJ. I have dp and cb.
I've passed emmissions testing with flying
colors. Just make sure you get the car
to operating temperature, and you shouldn't
have a problem.

I passed emmissions with this setup this year
and back in 1999.

I have the Greddy SP cat back. I looked at getting thr racing beat because I wanted a quite exhaust and Jason at the RX-7 store talked me into the Greddy SP and It looks Awesome!! Sounds very nice as well. Not as loud as the N1's or the other Greddy's or others aftermarket exhausts. I have pics if you wanna see. E-mail me for them michaelmauro@netzero.net

Thanks for the insight.

Which has a quieter note, the Greddy SP or the Power Extreme?

Supposedly the Power Extreme:

It also costs just a tad more...

Wink Thanks

Thanks for the exhaust advice. It helped me subtantially.
Thanks to you guys, I decided on the Greddy Power Extreme. I don't know yet if I'm going for the Bonez setup or not. Thanks again!

Probably the A'pexi N1 would be the loudest street legal one you could get.

As far as power gain, they are all pretty much the same unless you go with something that probably won't be street legel like the HKS Hiper Racing Exhaust.

cat back

RB lowered the price on their polished ss muffler with powder coated connecting pipe. I have the dual tip- looks almost like stock, so cops and ricers don't give it a second look, but it flows much better than stock. Quiet at normal speeds, louder at wot. Quality of workmanship and fit are excellent.
